#Subculture #motorcycling I have always been interested in subcultures, and the two that I am most obviously acquainted with are being a motorcyclist (biker) and spending time on canals. This month Wiltshire Highways (and possibly climate change) have kindly installed some temporary canals, and given that I don't own a narrowboat currently, my Royal Enfield Himalayan was the next best choice - marketed as "built for all roads, built for no roads." (see video below). The first Royal Enfield Motorcycle was produced in 1901 and their marketing strapline "made like a gun" relates to an 1893 contract to supply small arms to a factory in Middlesex, at which point they were making bicycles. Any of you who have watched Peaky Blinders will be able to imagine the role of the Canal network in this manufacture. Received wisdom is that the rise of the Universal Japanese motorcycle killed the British Motorcycle Industry by the 1970s, and Madras Motors were producing Enfield's under license as early as 1955 and by 1962 all the components were being made in India. In 2015 they purchased UK Motorcycle Design and Manufacturing Firm Harris Performance Products - and hence the excellent handling of my Himalayan. There is a host of historical and geo-political background to that brief summary that I'd love to have the space to expound upon. There's some irony there I reckon too - a UK company that was manufacturing small arms that ended up being taken over by a country looking for a motorcycle to patrol borders (named "the bullet") that is now a global presence that outsells Harley Davidson and has better quality control that Italy and Germany - see FortNine on YouTube Which Motorcycle Manufacturer is Best? [Laboratory Test] Returning to subcultures, part of my interest in them is being able to subvert assumptions and stereotypes - so yes, I am a lifelong biker, but I am also a fan of good science fiction writing, poetry, and a wide range of music including jazz, blues and ska (not just rock or metal). And on that theme, Enfield India are making excellent, affordable and reliable motorcycles, and the Chinese Manufacturers are not many years behind them. Here's my Himalayan/canal boat hybrid (I'm going slowly so as not to create too much of a wave and the revs are up to keep water from entering my exhaust)!

I want to talk about the humble Altus rear derailleur. I was thinking about what the most common derailleur I’ve fitted in the last 10 years and it turn out to be the Altus (RD-M310 to be precise). It’s not a pretty derailleur, it got a lots of plastic componentry, it’s not Shimano cheapest derailleur, the quality isn’t even that good. Its one of the most reliable derailleur I’ve fitted insofar, even being the go-to option to replace the more modern MTB type that have a tenancy to fail or end up shifting poorly. It’s not just limited to mountain or hybrid bikes but it even found its way onto road bike too. Easiest way to get a 11-36t cassette on a double? Enough capacity to do so even if the spec sheet said otherwise. That old Peugeot whose Simplex derailleur given up the ghost? Work perfectly on a 5 speeds drivetrain. Want that big pulley look without spending too much money? Look no further. I’ve lost count on how often I’ve fitted them, it’s such an unassuming componentry that never really given much thought about, until today when I was fixing a bike whose old 105 10 speed derailleur failed and the customer just want to have more gears without spending too much money, worked flawlessly and a happy customer at the end of the day. So yeah, I do like the M310.

1, On-road performance was a marked improvement, they are incredibly quiet and offer plenty of grip in the dry. 2, In the wet, where they’ve been tested comprehensively last summer, they show impressive traction. I’d put this down to the generous sipes cut into each tread block. 3, After 3 months and around 9,000km, the wear on these tyres was minimal. Tread depth remains even shoulder-to-shoulder, and despite the regular off-road forays, they’ve developed no battle scars worth mentioning.  Most weekends since fitting these tyres was spent on unsealed dirt roads and out bush. Were Chris Craft’s lapstrake sea skiffs made in their plant in Salsbury, MD their response to Lyman’s success with sales of their lapstrake boats?  It is powered by a 430 cu in Lincoln engine it is rumored that has a killer amount of torque but is fussy about the oil filter properly tightening to be leak free at each oil change. Holman and Moody have been associated with this engine. It came in second in two NASCAR car races. Its performance (in a Ford Thunderbird) matched neck and neck at the finish line with Lee Petty (in an Oldsmobile) in the first Daytona 500. Lee was finally named the winner in the photo finish. The 430 cu in (7.0 L) engine was produced from 1958 through 1965, and used in Ford, Mercury, and Lincoln products. Some of these cars weighted 5,700 lbs. The MEL (Lincoln) engine had a combustion chamber that was fully inside the cylinder, made possible by a 10 degree offset in its top deck. Chevy’s 348/409 engines had a very similar arrangement, although with a valve placement that optimized porting for better high-speed breathing. But that was not the MEL’s main design goal; torque was. Let’s take a closer look now at the structure Chris-Craft used to build its runabouts for 150 years. In Chris Crafts batten-seam construction which is where the planks butt together along their full-length edges and at their ends with small size wood battens at each plank seam. Batten seam construction creates a flush and fair surface on the boat. The difference compared to carvel construction is that there are longitudinal pieces (battens) that buttress each seam from the inside. In addition to the planks being screwed to the frames they are screwed along the full length of the boat’s battens. There is no need to caulk with this type of construction, which is most common in classic Chris Craft runabouts. The upholstery is trimmed in black alligator vinyl like the Chris Craft Cobra. The hull is 22 feet and 7 inches long. Her beam is 8 feet. White vinyl covers the foredeck. Mahogany, natural finished, hull sides.
