TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT #YYC CREATIVES!
Association of Registered Graphic Designers (RGD) Minds of Design speaker event is happening tonight at the Village Brewery.
Last chance to register and to confirm your spot to hear 3 speakers share short talks on AI, Graphic Design and additional exciting themes, such as:
Dave Nighbor | Brand & Marketing Lead, CarbonAi | Owner, 9 Lives Design
Designing with AI: Creative Ally or Hidden Threat?
As AI tools become more integrated into the design process, they challenge traditional notions of creativity and authorship. Is AI a powerful co-creator, or does it undermine the designer’s unique vision? In this talk, Dave will explore the implications of collaborating with AI in design, asking the question: Are we enhancing our creativity, or merely outsourcing it?
Wilson Wong | Partner and Creative Director, Everbrave
Topic: $100K Lost: How Getting Screwed Taught Me My Biggest Lesson
Wilson Wong shares his eye-opening experience of losing $100K to a longtime client, and the valuable lessons learned along the way. From protecting your work and health to building strong relationships, this talk offers insights to help designers navigate the business side of creativity with confidence.
Karen N. | Creative Director and Freelance Graphic Designer
Topic: Annual Reports: Functional—or Beautiful?
Design x 365: the activities of our lives are being written every day. The same is true for organizations and businesses. If design is expected to have longevity—it must work on more than one level; serve more than one audience; solve more than one problem. As a designer, it’s my responsibility to direct the reader through a document—where do they pause? Where are the visual breaks, and fun content in the sidebars? More importantly, how can the annual report be leveraged to increase awareness? In this presentation, Karen will share how she has positioned creative direction as an annual strategy, and how that evolved into making annual reports not just functional—but beautiful.

I'm excited to share that I've just completed the "Visual Communication (VisCom1001)" course on Sophia Learning! This course was a fantastic introduction to the fundamentals of visual design, diving into color theory, typography, layout, and how visuals influence us every day.
Looking forward to applying these skills in my work! #VisualCommunication#DesignFundamentals#SophiaLearning#Upskilling#LearningNeverStops
I hated drawing but pursued fine arts.
I never would have imagined taking up fine arts in college back when I was in high school. I never really had a talent for drawing or anything art-related besides photography. I also didn’t grow up with art-inclined people. So, how did I get myself into this career?
I made a funny yet good decision back when I was senior high school. I was leaning towards Accountancy or something business-related, which is why I chose the ABM strand. But on the first day of school, my name was not on the list of students taking ABM; instead, it was on the Arts & Design strand. I contested it, but by the time I was supposed to switch classes, I saw my “supposed” classmates and backed out. I went back to the A&D strand because most of my friends were there, so I had no choice but to make a career switch. My decision was not entirely because of that, but as my senior years went by, art grew on me. I became very interested in creating ideas and concepts, planning, and executing. I love how detailed it must be and how everything needs to be intricate.
I managed to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Advertising Arts. Though my bachelor’s was more focused on the art side of advertising rather than the account side, I still got to understand firsthand how concepts are made, the process of ideation, and how to draw both traditionally and digitally.
Looking back, my funny decision-making process led me to where I am now, and I have no regrets.

Remember the 2016 Oscars meltdown?
It was all about one thing: very basic Graphic Design. Bad one in that case.
I regularly show this to make people understand one simple thing: once you understand basic coms rules, you can at least avoid massive f*** up.
We're not even talking colours, images, animations here.
Only what I call CRAP -Contrast Repetition Alignment Proximity.
I know- not elegant but easy to remember. Anyone can quickly get it and apply it.
Essential coms rules don't only apply during a presentation. They are true all the time, everywhere, all at once. That's the beauty of it.
