As a DEI professional development leader and advocate for our AAPI affinity group, I had the honor of attending a powerful documentary screening about Taiwan—a nation whose story often goes unheard. The film was profoundly enlightening, shedding light on Taiwan’s struggles as an invisible nation, facing systemic erasure from global institutions like the United Nations and exclusion from vital organizations such as the World Health Organization. What struck me most was how this story is not just about geopolitics but also about identity, resilience, and the fight for recognition in a world shaped by wealth and power dynamics. It’s a sobering reminder of how marginalized communities, whether nations or individuals, must constantly push against forces that seek to silence them. This experience reaffirmed the importance of our work in DEI—to create spaces where underrepresented voices are amplified and stories like Taiwan’s are seen, heard, and valued. Let’s take action by staying informed, learning about struggles like Taiwan’s, and fostering a deeper understanding of others. By doing so, we not only appreciate the world’s complexities but also build stronger connections with those fighting to be heard. I think the purpose of art is to discover unknown territory of life and the Universe.
"Perhaps [JOINT SECURITY AREA] is a film that acts as a foundational point for globally acclaimed directors like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho to emerge." Acclaimed actor Lee Byung-hun stopped by TIFF's Studio 9 to reflect on the success of Park Chan-wook's 2000 breakout hit JOINT SECURITY AREA and the director's innovative works, and the growth of New Wave Korean Cinema.
