The FISH Team is deeply honoured to be walking alongside so many amazing Aboriginal Elders and Leaders from across Australia as we are led by their voices in the design and implementation of the FISH Myalup Karla Waangkiny Healing and Justice Initiative. The FISH Myalup Initiative is significant as it has been designed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide a place where First Nations people aged 16-35 can heal and receive holistic support to break intergenerational cycles of trauma, avoid (re)engagement in the justice system and contribute positively to society. Australia, and especially Western Australia, has the highest rates of imprisoning Indigenous in the western world and we know prisons do not bring real lasting change in building a cohesive and safe nation where all people feel valued and supported to make a positive contribution to this nation. The FISH Myalup Initiative has been 8 years in development with a national Codesign Group involved for the last 4 years in the program and 11 hectare site design. The Elders and Leaders voices must not only be listened to but heard and acted on in bringing real lasting change to the justice system as research, both national and international, tells us that prisons do not work, cost society a significant amount of money and do not enable people to heal and successfully transition back into society to contribute positively to their community. Adam Drake is also one of the members of the FISH National Codesign Group and our Elders and leaders are honoured to have Adam walking with them to bring real lasting change. It was great to have Adam over this week from the Northern Territory to join with 30 plus other Elders and leaders from all over Australia in the annual FISH Codesign Group get together and planning session. This would not have been possible without the support of the Paul Ramsay Foundation and the Estate of the Late Sonya Pamela Rodgers. Watch this space now that we have full Development Approval from the State Government of Western Australia as we now work to secure the funding and build the 11 hectare site ! #partnerships #togetherwecandomore #togetherwearebetter #workingtogether #Alternativetoprison #justicereinvestment #justice #codesign #communityled #togetherwearestronger #wellbeing #healing #structuralreform #leadership #bythepeopleforthepeople #justicereform #realdifference #togetherwecandomore #workingtogether #indigenousdesign #collaboration

The US approach to crime needs an overhaul. In their latest op-ed in The Hill, Sarah Rosen Wartell and David Pitts of the Urban Institute argue that "tough on crime" rhetoric fails to create lasting safety. The solution lies in evidence-based reforms—community violence intervention programs, economic support, and housing. Read how research-backed solutions can make our communities safer in the long term: https://shorturl.at/fCSF3
Excited to share my latest op-ed in The Hill, co-authored with Urban Institute President Sarah Rosen Wartell. In it, we advocate for keeping evidence-based solutions at the center of the public safety conversation, even as the campaign season intensifies. We discuss several approaches to reduce crime and highlight the potential of community violence intervention programs, which we are closely studying at Urban. Read the full piece by Urban Institute President Sarah Rosen Wartell and me here:
To tackle crime, spend less on prisons and more on people

This is good wisdom. I share this or something similar with clients all the time. As a corrections chaplain, I know about 'starting from scratch'. And... How many of you truly have ever started from scratch? Can you even imagine losing everything? Having to rebuild life with just what you're carrying? Those on LinkedIn are often seeking career advancement or are even unemployed. At we have resources: savings, connections, work history. Prisoners enter the world in many ways like abandoned children. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services more than 600,000 individuals are released from state and federal prisons each year. They're going to be your neighbors. What manner of neighbor do you want to have? Seriously consider doing 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 to help these human beings succeed upon reentry. Mentoring is the direst need, but funding for those who do the work is critical, too. If you can't work with these truly precious persons, then help us who do. It's your neighborhood, help make it safe and better. jpsi.org

Elizabeth Fry Week 2024- Abolition in Action-Behind the Numbers: A Call for Change Over the past year, we've closely watched the rising counts of women in Saskatchewan's Provincial Jails, particularly alarming is the overwhelming number on remand. Pine Grove Correctional Center consistently operates over capacity, while new units at Saskatchewan Hospital and the White Birch Female Remand Unit in Regina are being utilized to accommodate the overflow. These statistics are more than just figures; they represent individuals — mothers, aunties, grandmothers, friends, and sisters. They are people and approximately 90% of them are Indigenous. The high remand rates underscore the urgent need for resources and support in our communities, including housing, addiction/mental health services, and culturally relevant programs. It's time to prioritize real solutions that empower positive change within our communities. #BuildCommunitiesNotPrisons #EfryWeek2024
