This year, we’ve seen just how powerful participatory democracy can be. We’ve worked alongside communities to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges—and proved that real change happens when people have a say. 🌿 Climate action: Communities in Zimbabwe and Brazil co-created policies to protect forests, prevent landslides, and build stronger local leadership. 📱 Digital governance: Civil society organizations stepped up to tackle issues like AI ethics, misinformation, and data privacy, ensuring technology works for everyone. 🌈 Inclusive democracy: Women, youth, and displaced people led the way in shaping decisions that matter in Kenya, Cameroon, and beyond. And that’s just the beginning. Participatory democracy transformed lives in 2024, and there’s so much more to come. Every year in July, a set of #SDGs is reviewed in depth during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), with SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 13 (Climate Action), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships) under review in 2024. The HLPF also provides an opportunity for countries to present their own Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), assessing progress, gaps, achievements, and challenges in the implementation of the SDGs at their national level. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gJv83Ura

Combating Disinformation📱 ✅. On September 28, we celebrate the International Day for Universal 🌍 Access to Information, a vital reminder of the importance of transparency and the right to information in our societies 👤. This year, the focus is particularly relevant given the rising tide of disinformation✨. Access to accurate information is a cornerstone of democracy 💪🏾. Yet, the proliferation of false information undermines public trust, manipulates opinions, and threatens informed decision-making. According to the UNESCO, ensuring universal access to reliable information empowers individuals and communities, enabling them to discern fact from fiction. Disinformation can have dire consequences, from affecting elections to impacting public health responses, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic. Combating this challenge requires not just access to information but also media literacy—equipping individuals with the tools to critically evaluate sources👏🏾. On this day, let us advocate for stronger policies that promote transparency, support independent journalism 🖋️, and foster media literacy programmes. By prioritising universal access to accurate information, we can build resilient societies capable of withstanding the waves of disinformation that threaten our collective understanding🙂. The latest Human Development Report 2023-2024 highlights widening disparities in human development, with concerns about irreversible setbacks. Corruption continues to pose a significant barrier to fair progress, worsening existing inequalities and eroding trust in governance. The United Nations and its 193 Member States marked a significant milestone in September 2015 with the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, consisting of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) focusing on people, prosperity, peace and institutions, planet, and partnerships. Every year in July, a set of SDGs is reviewed in depth during the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), with SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 13 (Climate Action), 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and 17 (Partnerships) under review in 2024. The HLPF also provides an opportunity for countries to present their own Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), assessing progress, gaps, achievements, and challenges in the implementation of the SDGs at their national level. With #SDG16 being the closest goal to democratic values, my latest article provides a brief overview of how SDG 16 dimensions related to #democracy and its principles (including representation, participation, rule of law, and rights) were portrayed in the VNRs of 2024. Many thanks to Annika Silva-Leander for her guidance and review of this piece. Read more below. 👇 https://lnkd.in/eFjibtYY

Civic engagement is changing in a changing world. But what does this change look like? Practitioners from Europe and the Global South get together to compare notes and, hopefully, advance towards a shared understanding.
Interested in #governance issues? If so, join our brown bag lunch this Thursday, September 19, to find out more about UNDP's Accelerator Labs and their role in fostering civic engagement. It's bittersweet to hold the result of my work! During my recent journey working in the Office of Intergovernmental Support and Coordination for Sustainable Development in the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA), I actively supported the drafting of the report titled "The Role of #UN in Promoting Development in the Context of Globalization and Interdependence" from the very beginning. This report draws on various fields, including the new challenges of globalization as we face a rise in armed conflicts worldwide, global wealth loss due to illicit financial flows, the challenges of climate change (which urgently required the involvement of Indigenous Communities to address adaptation processes), gender inequality, the ethics of artificial intelligence, and more. Our recommendations emphasize the need to reposition the multilateral governance framework to address these rapid social, political, and economic changes and to facilitate conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and the reduction of inequality gaps. Special thanks to Tonya Vaturi for her guidance and trust in my work!
