Planning for the next year - how to set strategic goals? In the latest Applied School Leadership Podcast Brad Entwistle and I discuss this important end-of-year routines for school leaders. [Brad] What are the first steps you recommend school leaders take when beginning the strategic planning process for a new academic year? [Paul] The first step should always be a review of the past year—what worked, what didn’t, and why. From there, engaging in a SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) can provide clear direction for setting priorities and objectives that are both needed and achievable for the upcoming year. Be widely collaborative, put all of the key players in a room, lock the door and let them out when you have a great planning tool for the year. You can listen here - https://lnkd.in/gpBtFb7n and here - https://lnkd.in/gD3_wNT6 I listen on Spotify! #leadership #appliedleadership #appliedschoolleadership

I recently had the pleasure of joining Connie Malamed on The eLearning Coach podcast, where we dove deep into a topic that's close to my heart—leadership in L&D. Too often, leadership is viewed through the lens of titles and roles, but I believe it's about the behaviors we exhibit, no matter where we sit in an organization. We explored the idea that leadership isn't about who you are; it's about what you do. It’s about consistently demonstrating traits like empathy, integrity, and vision—skills that anyone can cultivate, regardless of their position. If you're interested in redefining what it means to be a leader in learning and development, I encourage you to give it a listen. We touched on everything from the importance of intentionality in our actions to the critical need for empathy in the programs we create. The leaders people want to work for (and with) are the ones who are quick to admit they DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY DON’T KNOW because it demonstrates one of the leadership characteristics we all love to see - VULNERABILITY. It’s why I tell leaders to not only have, but also SHARE as many conversations as possible with employees, customers, partners, etc. where they are learning something new. (I even created an approach called ‘PodCLASSES’ where leaders are the “students” and are learning about vital areas and topics via a podcast format. We then share the “classes” with the rest of the organization.) I also love this page from Steven Pressfield’s amazing book “the WAR of ART” that reinforces this whole point. #leadership #humanleadership #vulnerability #learning #continuouslearning #leaderdevelopment #learninganddevelopment
