1984-1987 Buick Grand Nationals and the 1987 GNX – A turbocharged approach to performance! While we take turbocharging for granted these days, when Buick applied it to their venerable V-6 in the 80s, it was considered radical. GM had been the the turbo business as early as 1961 with the Corvair Monza and Olds Jetfire, but those were crude applications. The computer-based engine management systems of the 80s allowed real HP from much smaller engines and Buick applied this with gusto. On behalf of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation and iEDM, we were commissioned to design and implement a asphalt concept on site that would do justice to the hybrid use as a race track as well as a public road with many different users. But what exactly does the new asphalt have to withstand in order to function as both a race track and a public road? Let's take a look at an analysis by BREMBO from the year 2022. For those who live in North America, the Rossion Q1 was a sports car devised by the two men who had been the importers of Lee Noble's cars in the USA. Many large and small changes were made so that this could be a 'new' car but sharing the same steel spaceframe chassis and the majority of the suspension geometry. They had purchased the rights to the M400 design to continue producing the basic formula after Noble was developing what would become the M600. I rather like the Q1, I would happily have one. It's not the same as the original M400 (it never tried to compete with it) and shows that, with good underpinnings, competent owners can make something that stands the test of time. It's a rare car, with less than 100 units made. Demand for such cars is typically low, with most buyers citing the lack of dealer/service network etc. My opinion on this? Well, a conventional sports car is not a fly-by-wire Boeing 777 so as long as the brakes and steering are well designed and effective, the failure of any other components due to any stress is not a major concern. A Corvette is a car you own for a while.
