Driving Orthopedic Excellence Orthopedic surgery is evolving towards value-based care, with strategies to enhance patient outcomes and operational efficiency. I presented the "Role of Orthopaedic Surgeons in Bundled Payments (APMs) " in March at OVBC 2024. Here are four of the key takeaways/strategies: 1. Standardization and Cost of Care: Actively advocate for the significance of standardizing care pathways and implant selection to reduce error rates and costs, ultimately improving patient outcomes. Lean Six Sigma principles play a pivotal role in this process. 2. Quality and Outcomes: Actively stress the importance of data agreements, PROMs, and patient selection in actively ensuring high-quality care delivery. 3. The 3 C's: Actively champion coordination, communication, and collaboration as vital for actively successful implementation. Advocating for these principles actively fosters teamwork and actively enhances efficiency. 4. Financial Distribution: Actively explore the equitable margins-sharing between organizations and individual surgeons, actively incentivizing quality care and cost-effectiveness. These strategies represent our commitment at OrthoVirginia to advancing orthopedic care in alignment with value-based principles, ultimately benefiting patients and healthcare systems. There are a plethora of misconceptions about orthopaedics. Let's break some stereotypes. One common misconception is that orthopaedic surgeons are focused on surgery, often dismissing non-surgical treatments. In reality, we believe in a holistic approach to patient care. We work collaboratively with physical therapists, pain management specialists, and other healthcare professionals to explore all non-surgical options. Furthermore, orthopaedic surgeons are sometimes labelled the 'carpenters of medicine', focusing solely on mechanical fixes, like screws and plates. This stereotype ignores the complexity of the biological and medical aspects of musculoskeletal health that orthopaedists must understand.
