Many people say they are patriotic, yet I’ve noticed that veteran-owned businesses, specifically VOSBs (Veteran-Owned Small Businesses) and SDVOSBs (Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses), are often only invited into project teams when it’s “required.” The reality is that honoring our veterans should not be a box to check—it should be a reflection of our core values and commitment to those who served, sacrificed, and, in some cases, returned home with combat injuries. . SDVOSB set-asides were created to recognize the sacrifices of military service members from all branches who risked their lives in times of war. And, more broadly, diversity set-asides honor a complex American history, giving space to disadvantaged and underrepresented groups who have faced systemic barriers. A truly inclusive society acknowledges these experiences and strives to uplift those affected—not only when mandated but because it’s the right thing to do. . I hope my colleagues will listen to their better angels, embracing these values in every project and partnership. Patriotism isn’t just about symbols and words; it’s about acting in support of those who have served and ensuring that the principles of equity and recognition are woven into our actions daily. . Happy Memorial Day! The question is often asked "Should I Thank a Veteran on Memorial Day?". Well, we think it's appropriate to thank a Veteran for their service on any day of the calendar year...however, it is a complex question. It is essential to understand the distinction between these two observances to ensure our gratitude is appropriately directed. In the military combat arms profession, it is well known that we do not leave a man behind . There are obviously many reasons for this but the biggest one is that this is the right thing to do, and what allows us as Americans to keep our humanity and dignity. My first Combat Tour, of three, was in Ramadi where there were many US soldiers sailors and marines killed and horribly wounded. Jocko Willink does a YouTube that you can listen to where he talks about all the deaths and memorials in Ramadi during the 06-07 time period. We never left an area until we had collected our dead and sometimes we lost more soldiers collecting our dead . After collection, we go through ceremony of recognition. We also investigate their death to figure out how we could’ve done things better. An after action review was always a useful exercise to learn how to do better. One of my biggest triggers is thinking about collecting the dead and wounded from war, but it’s something that had to be done. How is a college that’s not directly engaged in combat, not have time to recognize the death of a veteran student who deployed ? How can we make time but they can’t make time ? Why are Endicott college deans and professors writing a book about trauma and alluding to a student who committed suicide and wasn’t recognized by the college . A few years later, I’m identifying as a disabled veteran and they’re using my rifle on purpose for a year to try to get me to commit suicide after identifying as 100%. And when I asked for the protections that I should be provided, they don’t have them. This student suicide should have been investigated. The soldier in the article below went through machine gun fire to collect a fallen comrade . Endicott college can’t even have a memorial service for a veteran student who served during a time of war and actually deployed. They’re actually getting paid to protect veterans and they’re not. Why is Endicott college getting millions of dollars in G.I. bill money? Just based on what they did to me, they should not be receiving funding. Why are we rewarding colleges that can’t serve the disabled?

Honoring Our Fallen Heroes: Memorial Day and Beyond As Memorial Day approaches, I want to highlight the often-overlooked stories behind the names we see on bridges, highways, and cemeteries. These are the names of our fallen veterans, and their stories are fading as the last survivors of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam pass on. My own ancestors served, and I grew up hearing incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice. It's a source of regret that I didn't preserve their words more carefully. We're losing precious first-hand accounts with every passing day. The recent news about the Francis Scott Key Bridge reminded me how little the younger generations may know about America’s past. Let's change that! This May, I'll be sharing stories of some of the places dedicated to fallen veterans. I hope this will inspire others to learn the history behind these names. Is there a national map or resource listing veteran-named highways and bridges? If you know of one, please share! May 2/31 Next time you're on US Highway 12, remember the sacrifices of the Iron Brigade! This Civil War unit, known for its black hats and bravery, suffered heavy losses at battles like Gettysburg. This portion of the highway is also dedicated to such battles as Second Bull Run and Antietam. I was fortunate enough to serve alongside USS Antietam (CG 54), third in name, for four deployments. Learning the history of the Battle of Antietam is well worth the read/viewing (in comments) for those who do not know of this historic battle. While the battle took place in Maryland, there are dedications to those that died in battle all along US Highway 12.
