Is there a good economic reason to encourage employees to take PTO? Depends... If you take the straight "labor utility" view, then of course not. Theoretically, an employee's daily output is more valuable than the amount you pay them for the output, so it makes more sense to pay out the PTO than to lose a day of productivity. Wow, that's cynical. 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲: Employee makes $100,000 a year. Assume there are 250 working days a year (because of weekends and legally mandated holidays). Employee's daily pay = $100k/250 = $400 For a business to be at least somewhat profitable, the value of that employee's daily output has to equal $400 + x. Let's just say x = $100, meaning the employee gets paid $400 to do $500 worth of work. Now let's assume the employee has 3 weeks (15 days) of accrued PTO. That means, if the employee uses all of their PTO, the business loses $7,500 worth of value ($500 times 15 days). But if the employee keeps working and the business pays out the unused PTO of $6,000, they get to keep the $1,500 of excess value. Now imagine an unlimited PTO policy... No accruals, and employees typically take less time off. So theoretically, the business can capture more value, right? Wrong. Any situation where employees don't take time off is bad for both sides. Employees who don't take time off burn out quicker, making them more likely to quit. Replacing an employee can cost up to 2 times their annual salary between recruitment costs, training costs, and lost productivity. So for the employee who makes $100,000 a year, that replacement cost is a lot higher than the extra $1,500 of value created in the above example. Not taking PTO is also bad for employees' career growth. According to research by Project: Time Off, employees who take more than 10 days off per year are nearly twice as likely to receive a raise or bonus in a given 3-year period, as compared to their peers who take less than 10 days off. That's because time off gives us the space to recharge and be 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 productive when we return to work. So, maybe there is a good economic reason to encourage employees to take PTO after all...

If your company has unlimited PTO, do your people know how to use it? As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of work-life balance, it's becoming increasingly clear that having unlimited paid time off (PTO) is a game-changer for both employees and employers. But, it's not a perfect system. Unlimited PTO empowers employees to prioritize their mental and physical well-being, reduce burnout, and ultimately increase productivity. By removing the restrictions around vacation days, employees are able to take the time they need to recharge and return to work refreshed and motivated. While unlimited PTO is a great perk, it's important to set a minimum number of days to take off each quarter to ensure that employees are actually utilizing their time off. Encouraging employees to take regular breaks not only benefits their individual health and happiness, but also contributes to a more positive and productive work environment overall. Here are three tips for implementing unlimited PTO with a minimum number of days off per quarter: 1. Communicate openly with employees about the importance of taking time off and encourage them to prioritize their well-being. Set a "suggested number" of days off per quarter. One of my client's suggests 5 as a good number. 2. Set clear guidelines for employees on how to request time off and establish a process for tracking and monitoring their days off (not to police, but to encourage!). This will help ensure that employees are taking the necessary breaks without disrupting work flow. 3. Lead by example as a manager or leader by taking time off yourself and demonstrating the importance of self-care. Show your team that it's not only okay, but necessary to prioritize your well-being and take time away from work to recharge. How does your company handle unlimited pto? Building a positive PTO culture is a non-negotiable in today's fast-paced economy — and summer is a great time to do it. 😎 ⛱️ As TLNT highlights in a recent article, the traditional vacation season offers a unique opportunity to emphasize the benefits of taking paid time off. In today’s competitive landscape, benefits are a key differentiator. It’s crucial for HR teams to evaluate their benefits packages holistically, considering not just costs and uptake rates but also how these benefits impact employee engagement, well-being, and culture. PTO, for instance, is often underused due to cultural pressures and inflexible policies. Nearly half of American employees work at least an hour per day while on vacation, with 27% working over three hours. This inability to disconnect leads to stress and turnover, with 43% of employees reporting contemplating quitting their jobs while on vacation.
