A non-cancerous type of brain tumor, low-grade gliomas are typically slow growing and more treatable than other tumor types. Over time, though, some low-grade gliomas spread to different parts of the brain and spine. When they do, they become more aggressive and mortality rates rise. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation has awarded a grant to researchers at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt and the The Hospital for Sick Children to study why some low-grade gliomas behave and spread like cancerous tumors. Pinpointing the cause could eventually lead to more effective treatments.
