Developing Emerging Leaders I’ve been working recently with a cohort of emerging leaders, having had the opportunity as a guest lecturer at the University of Technology (UTS) in Sydney. This cohort of aspiring Leaders completing their Masters in Engineering, made it clear that organisations need to really ‘up their game’ when it comes to developing the Leaders they hope to hold onto in the future. So as a Senior Leader, what might you need to consider when developing your emerging leaders: 1 - It’s critical to start early in an individual's leadership career and address their individual developmental needs. The individuals I worked with are hungry for more learning and more wisdom and will be more discerning about the employers they choose to work with. 2- Recognise that you are the best source of information when it comes to an individual's developmental areas. You have the closest view of their strengths and weaknesses and are in the best position to influence their development. Don’t waste it. 3 - Adopt a common language for what good leadership looks like and facilitate explicit but low-stakes discussions between yourself and your emerging leaders about crucial leadership aspects. They are hungry for feedback. 4 - And, normalize the need for personal growth and be open about your own developmental areas, creating a culture where the need for continuous improvement is expected and supported!
How lucky these emerging leaders are to hear such sage advice so early in their career journey!
