A Stellantis joint venture with Samsung SDI has won a commitment from the U.S. government for up to a $7.54 billion loan to help build two electric vehicle battery plants in Kokomo, Indiana. The project being built by StarPlus Energy LLC is expected to create at least 2,800 jobs at the plants and hundreds more at a nearby park for parts supply companies, the Energy Department said Monday in a statement. The loan still must be finalized, but the government said the commitment shows its intent to finance the project. To get the loan, StarPlus must develop a plan to engage with community and labor leaders to create good paying jobs. It also has to meet technical, legal, environmental and financial conditions before the government will fund the loan. Honda Motor Co., announced that it plans to build a comprehensive EV value chain in Canada with an approximate investment of CAD$15 billion (USD$11 billion), including investment by joint venture partners, to strengthen its EV supply system and capability to prepare for a future increase in EV demand in North America. Honda has begun evaluating the requirements to build an innovative and environmentally responsible Honda EV plant and a stand-alone Honda EV battery plant in Alliston, Ontario. The proposed Honda EV value chain will also include a cathode active material and precursor (CAM/pCAM) processing plant through a joint venture partnership with POSCO Future M Co., Ltd. and a separator plant through a joint venture partnership with Asahi Kasei Corporation, with announcements to follow in their respective Ontario communities. Honda expects that electric vehicle production will begin in 2028. Once fully operational, the EV plant will have a production capacity of 240,000 EVs per year and the EV battery plant will have a capacity of 36 GWh per year. In addition to securing the current employment level of 4,200 associates at its two existing manufacturing facilities in Ontario, Honda estimates it will add a minimum of 1,000 new associates for the EV and EV battery manufacturing facilities. The investment in the new facilities will also create significant spinoff jobs across all sites, including in the construction sector. Honda has begun the process of evaluating the scope of its investment and completing negotiations with its joint venture partners. This work is expected to be finalized during the next six months and more details will be shared at that time. To support this project, Honda is collaborating with the governments of Canada and Ontario to drive innovation in low-emissions manufacturing by accessing performance-based initiatives available through the federal government’s new Investment Tax Credits and provincial direct and indirect incentives.

Tritium® was an extraordinary Australian success story and was once ranked as among the world’s best-selling fast charger makers, writes Peter Roberts. However its fall has been equally precipitous since expanding and listing in the US – a symptom being the collapse in the company’s share price from over US$200 in September, 2023 to US$3.64 yesterday. How the company came to this will be written about for many years – how a manufacturer had a 75 per cent market share in electric vehicle chargers in Australia, and ranked number one in the US and number three in Europe faltered during a time of rising EV sales is bound to be a case study in every management course. https://lnkd.in/gySdTZJq #manufacturing #australianmanufacturing #finance #electricvehicles #evcharging #automotive

*** Stellantis & @Contempory amperex technology form JV for EV battery factory in Spain *** Stellantis and China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited Amperex Technology have agreed to invest up to €4.1bn ($4.3bn) in a joint venture to build a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant in Zaragoza, Spain. The two companies have formed a 50-50 joint venture and aim to begin production by the end of 2026. The plant’s capacity could reach up to 50GWh, contingent on the evolution of the European EV market and ongoing support from Spanish and European Union authorities. This collaboration follows a non-binding memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in November 2023, which outlined plans for the local supply of LFP battery cells and modules to support Stellantis’ electric vehicle production in Europe. The partnership also focuses on advancing Stellantis’ battery electric vehicle (BEV) technology and further enhancing the battery supply chain in Europe. Stellantis chairman John Elkann said: “Stellantis is committed to a decarbonised future, embracing all available advanced battery technologies to bring competitive electric vehicle products to our customers". CATL chairman and CEO Robin Zeng said: “The joint venture has taken our cooperation with Stellantis to new heights, and I believe our cutting-edge battery technology and outstanding operation knowhow combined with Stellantis’ #Strategy #BEVs #Batteries

Most of the world's EV batteries are manufactured in China. However, the price drops seen in China have not spilled over to the rest of the world. ✅ SK On, building factories in the U.S. to supply Ford Motor Company and Volkswagen, is reportedly facing financial turmoil. ✅ Northvolt lost its $2 billion contract with BMW Group and has indicated that it is conducting a strategic review of its business model and growth plans. ✅ LG Energy Solution indicated a couple of weeks back that it is temporarily pausing construction plans for its energy storage systems (ESS) battery plant in Queen Creek, Arizona. The construction of the cylindrical electric vehicle battery plant will continue as planned. #electricvehicle #batterystorage #freetrade https://lnkd.in/gZMURgSM
