Excellent article from government news on Australia public sector. The same issues facing Australia public sector is also impacted public sectors in Canada and United States. https://lnkd.in/gzp_XWVR Doing more with less #Budget constraints are likely to remain a prominent issue in 2025, with councils facing the daunting task of delivering high-quality services while dealing with capped rates and limited funding. Residents and ratepayers continue to expect a growing list of services, from infrastructure improvements and waste management to enhanced public safety and environmental initiatives. However, financial limitations mean councils must achieve these goals with fewer resources. Attracting new talent to drive innovation Historically, the local government sector has relied on a steady flow of internal talent, with many senior positions filled by those who have built careers within the field. However, as expectations grow and demands on councils become more complex, attracting talent from outside the sector is expected to increase. Regional councils may face recruitment challenges While larger metropolitan councils may be well-positioned to attract top talent, regional councils face a different reality. Many skilled professionals prefer the amenities and career opportunities offered by urban areas, leaving rural councils struggling to fill key management positions. This issue is likely to persist in 2025, forcing regional councils to think creatively about how to attract and retain talented staff. AI will be used to boost productivity Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming an essential tool in local government operations, and 2025 is expected to see an even greater reliance on the technology to streamline workflows and enhance productivity. Social media will become an important communication tool Social media’s role as a communication channel for local governments is set to expand in 2025. Councils will increasingly use platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (X), and Instagram to connect with residents, share information about services and events, and provide real-time updates during emergencies. Navigating a complex future As local governments map out their plans for 2025, they will need to adapt to an environment marked by financial constraints, technological advancements, and changing workforce dynamics. Government agencies can add value to the community by focusing on several key areas. One of the first things I recommend is that government agencies strive to be transparent about their operations, decisions, and spending. By providing easy access to information, citizens can better understand how their tax dollars are being used and hold government officials accountable for their actions. In addition, government should actively seek input from citizens on policies, projects, and initiatives that affect the community. This can be done through public meetings, online forums, surveys, and other engagement tools. By involving citizens in the decision-making process, governments can ensure that policies reflect the needs and priorities of the community. Most importantly, agencies should prioritize delivering high-quality services to citizens promptly and efficiently. This includes processing permits and licenses to provide social services and emergency response. Streamlining processes, embracing technology, and focusing on customer service can all help improve service delivery. They are supporting economic development in the community by investing in infrastructure, providing incentives for businesses to locate or expand in the area, and supporting workforce development initiatives. By creating a favorable business environment, governments can stimulate job growth and improve residents' overall quality of life. Communities must invest in education; skills development is crucial for long-term prosperity. Government agencies can support schools, libraries, vocational training programs, and other educational initiatives to ensure residents have the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the modern economy. Protecting the environment and promoting sustainability should be priorities for government agencies. This can include implementing policies to reduce pollution, conserve natural resources, promote renewable energy, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Crisis Response and Emergency Preparedness: Government agencies are critical in responding to crises and emergencies, such as natural disasters, public health emergencies, and security threats. These are just a few areas where government agencies can add value and positively impact their residents. Change in Local Government has to come, but are we ready for it? It feels like Public Sector leaders have been under pressure to do more with less since time begun. Escalating demand, reducing resources and let’s face it a huge fatigue from all the knocks along the way. So what is going to be new now we have a new Government in place? Well probably nothing immediate…. There are certainly positive noises coming out of Whitehall around rebuilding trust and empowering Local Government further (good!) and also some big challenges ahead (small things like ….Planning reform!) But what should we concentrate our efforts on in the short term to ensure we are ready for big change – whether that be centrally driven, or as myself and C.Co colleagues have talked about before, just the sheer fact that we can’t keep trying to do more of what we’ve always done with less? I have long believed to ensure sustainable organisations we have to focus on long-term change. Children’s and Adults Services cannot be ‘fixed’ in one financial year, or one political term. But to do that safely we have to be assured that the cogs of the machine, the Brilliant Basics, are working. Still, in Local Government our processes are not always customer focussed, our services are not always people-centred and some workforces have become distracted from core purpose and are waylaid in silos of bureaucracy. As much as I am passionate about people-centred, community focussed change, we have to be able to rely on sound financial management, effective governance, robust business administration and customer-focussed delivery of support. Let’s not overlook the significance of these services and when working well, their ability to drive and enable the fundamental long-term transformation that is required. #localgov #councils #publicsector #gov
