🔋🌱 First promising results of the simulation of hot forming of metallic bipolar plates for H2 fuel cells. 👇   The cost-effective and mass production-ready forming of bipolar plates as key components in H2 fuel cells is of central importance for the energy transition. In the Interreg Deutschland-Nederland project "H2-Enabler", the project partners HoDforming GmbH, Reden Research & Development Nederland, the Fraunhofer Innovation Platform for Advanced Manufacturing at the University of Twente and NMWP Management GmbH are therefore investigating the potential of hot forming for the production of metallic bipolar plates for H2 fuel cells.   In a first step, hot forming is simulated for various sheet thicknesses and temperatures in order to identify the optimum forming parameters. The 2D simulation below shows the forming of a bipolar steel plate with a thickness of 0.1 mm at 600 °C and the resulting von Mises stresses. Solid electrolytes appear to be a potential replacement for flammable liquid electrolytes in lithium batteries. This inorganic/hybrid solid electrolyte is a composite of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt, (poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoro propylene) (PVDF-HFP) polymer and sodium superionic conductor (NASICON)-type Li1+xAlxTi2−x(PO4)3 (LATP) ceramic powder. The structure, morphology, mechanical behavior, and electrochemical performance of this composite solid electrolyte, based on various amounts of LiTFSI, were investigated. The lithium-ion transfer and conductivity increased as the LiTFSI lithium salt concentration increased. However, the mechanical strength apparently decreased once the percentage of LITFSI was over 60%. The hybrid electrolyte with 60% LiTFSI content showed high ionic conductivity of 2.14 × 10−4 S cm−1, a wide electrochemical stability window (3–6 V) and good electrochemical stability. The capacity of the Li|60% LiTFSI/PVDF-HFP/LATP| LiFePO4 solid-state lithium-metal battery was 103.8 mA h g−1 at 0.1 C, with a high-capacity retention of 98% after 50 cycles. During my recent work, I focused on the electrospinning process to develop advanced battery separators using Polyacrylonitrile (PAN). PAN, known for its high thermal stability, mechanical strength, and electrochemical properties, plays a key role in enhancing the performance and safety of lithium-ion batteries. By leveraging PAN's unique properties—such as its high porosity and excellent ionic conductivity—I successfully optimized the structure of the separator, contributing to improved battery efficiency and lifespan. The electrospinning technique allowed for precise control over fiber alignment and diameter, resulting in a high-quality separator that can handle extreme conditions while maintaining stability. This work is a step toward more sustainable and efficient battery solutions, vital for next-generation energy storage systems. Our Latest work on Harnessing MBene termination for superior anode interfaces in Li/Ca-ion batteries has been published in the Journal of Energy Storage (IF=8.9). The highlight of the work is as follows. Ambient temperature structural stability of Cl-terminated V2B MBene A lower voltage profile was found for Li+ and Ca+2 ions on the MBene anode. Conductive anodic behavior stems from Li/Ca ionic antibonding interaction. Silicon-based anode materials, namel silicon-oxygen (SiOx) and silicon-carbon (Si/C) anode materials are both promising alternatives to traditional graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries, but they have some key differences namely their composition, capacity, volume expansion, stability, SEI formation, manufacturing method, cash cost and scalability. Both SiOx and Si/C anode materials aim to harness the high capacity of silicon while mitigating its drawbacks. SiOx offers a balance of capacity and stability, while Si/C composites strive for higher capacities with carefully engineered structures to manage silicon's volume expansion. 🔋 Advancing the Future of Lithium-Ion Batteries with LRLO Cathodes 🔋 Congratulations to Na Ri Park, a PhD candidate at Laboratory for Energy Storage and Conversion!! We are excited to share our recent work on enhancing lithium-rich layered oxide (#LRLO) cathode materials for next-generation batteries. Through a #drycoating process with lithium borate (LBO), we achieved a uniform surface layer that protects LRLO at high voltages and significantly improves cycling stability. When combined with lithium bis(oxalato)borate (#LiBOB) as an electrolyte additive, the LBO-coated LRLO delivered cycling stability with practical areal loading and minimum voltage fade. Summary of the LLZO-PEO-LiTFSI model system study: (i) self-standing and flexible separators (INURSE) with LLZO content up to 90-95 wt% can be obtained using a simple process, (ii) INURSE separator can be used in cells without applying additional pressure, (iii) Li/Li cells with INURSE show excellent long-term cycling stability, however, (iv) the use of ultra-rich solid electrolytes do not improve the electrochemical performance of Li/NMC622 cells. Therefore, on the next step, PEO will be replaced by a polymer matrix suitable for application in high-voltage #solidstatebatteries.
