🌟 Bloom with Grace: Lessons from My Toddler 🌟 As a work-from-home mom, balancing work, responsibilities, and parenthood is a beautiful challenge. I'm constantly immersed in the world of online opportunities, and it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle. But amidst the work, household chores, and errands, there are moments that remind me of life's true treasures. I've decided to work a couple of hours today on a Sunday, and by my side is my 2-year-old son, his eyes wide with wonder. I've decided to take a break and hand him a paper boat and a paper plane I crafted for him (for the first time!). The joy on his face as He marvels at these simple creations fills me with a sense of gratitude. Watching him play with grace and innocence, I couldn't help but smile and reflect on how much of a blessing my son is to my life. Every moment watching him grow fills me with fulfillment, joy and shows me a reflection of how beautiful a life can be. Now, as he begins to reveal his amazing personality, I feel an immense pride in the young man he's becoming. This brings to mind a saying: "Wherever life takes you, bloom with grace." This also reflects on the journey of parenthood and the parallels it holds with our professional lives. In the ever-changing landscape of our careers and ventures, it's essential to remember the importance of resilience, adaptability, and, above all, grace. Whether we're conquering new adventures or challenges, let's bloom with grace, embracing each twist and turn with the same wonder and enthusiasm as my little one with his paper toys. Just putting this right here so I can come back to it all week long! Admittedly, I have found myself saying to my child, "How can you be so grumpy when we are doing all the things you love!? You were so excited!" Depending on your child's age, temperament, and nervous system, the holiday hustle might bring joy, or it might feel confusing, overwhelming, or unpredictable. Instead of assuming how they’re feeling, let’s take a moment to step into their shoes: What might they be noticing or feeling about these changes? What helps them feel safe and calm in the middle of all the excitement? How can we slow down together? Do you remember what it was like when YOU were their age? Fatherhood at the fringes of the day sucks! One of the most difficult parts about being a dad in a traditional work world is the expectation that daddy-time only comes at the ends of the day. The hour before our children catch the bus couldn’t be more stressful. Getting our toddler ready, praying he agrees to wear pants, and satisfied if he’s eaten a bite of yogurt, or chocolate milk, or vodka, while his sibling debates between breakfast and remodeling the playroom, wreaks havoc on my parenting ego. And just as we are about to leave... one or both of them decides a bowel movement is in order. Literally, always! That’s why quality parenting time outside the fringes of the day has been a game changer for my confidence as a dad, and I am as intentional about accumulating it as I can be. For many of the Ambitious Dads I’ve spoken with, the mindset that we can only engage with our children at the fringes of the day seems to be the biggest obstacle to more quality time. If we’re willing to free ourselves of these conventional views of work and family time, endless creative opportunities for play can emerge. I want to parent before exhaustion sets in. Remember life is available ONLY in the Present Moment😀😇 My mother has held a special place in my life for countless reasons, and her significance stems from the unique roles she fulfills and the unconditional love she provides. I can't say enough about her sacrifices, big and small, to ensure my brother and I had everything we need to succeed and be happy. I have found that the most defining characteristic of mothers is their unwavering love. From the moment of conception, through every stage of life, and beyond, mothers love us unconditionally, regardless of any circumstances or mistakes. ▶️The best motivators come from feeling a sense of autonomy, mastery, and purpose! ▶️Autonomy or acting on our own VALUES and interests will give us a sense of freedom and independence. Mastery helps us to become BETTER at something that MATTERS to us. ▶️Purpose helps FULFIL our natural desire to contribute to a cause greater and more enduring than ourselves! It is the essential motivation that keeps me productive throughout the day. That’s why I chose a job that offered opportunities for personal satisfaction, despite having other options. Shawn Archer writes in his book “The Happiness Advantage” about a concept he calls activation energy. 📍He wanted to learn the guitar but he couldn't maintain the discipline to practice every day. 📍He realized that it took TOO much energy to start practicing compared to how easy it was to just turn on the TV so he left his guitar in an easy to reach spot, REMOVED the batteries from his TV and successfully manipulated himself into practicing the guitar MUCH more often! 📍It’s making HABITS so that everyday decisions don’t wear us out, we will set up our life in such a way that making the right decision is convenient, and succumbing to temptation is difficult. Time Isn’t Infinite—Make Every Moment Count We all know tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. But how often do we act like we have all the time in the world? Take our parents, for example. If you live in a different town, maybe you see them two, three, or four times a year. Now, think about their age. Let’s say the average person lives to 78, and your parents are in their late 60s. That’s about 10 years left. But if you only see them four times a year, you don’t have 10 years. You have 40 moments. When we break it down like that, time takes on a whole new meaning. It’s a reminder to be where your feet are. Appreciate what you have. Be present. Life is full of distractions, but moments with loved ones are finite. ~12 years ago, leaving my 3-year-old twins for a week-long offsite felt like an insurmountable challenge. Tears streamed down my face throughout the flight, the ache of missing them overwhelming. This week, traveling for another offsite, I still miss my twins. But now, a sense of calm replaces the anxiety. I trust they'll be okay, and my journey is filled with thoughtful reflection instead of tears. Motherhood itself has been a teacher, preparing me for life's formidable moments. It has shown me that what feels impossible today can become manageable tomorrow. Being a working mom from day one hasn't been easy, but navigating the complexities has given me strength and resilience. Life happens, and we evolve with it. Just as I've learned to navigate the challenges of motherhood and career, I've learned to approach all challenges with greater confidence and grace. Today's Tips: Family First At work, the phrase "We are like a family" often circulates, but let's face it, it's not entirely true. While colleagues may be supportive and friendly, nothing compares to the irreplaceable bond of family. As a single mom since 1997, my priority has always been my children, ensuring they have what I didn't. Being there for my boys through their milestones, from school plays to teenage surprises, and into adulthood, has been a fulfilling journey. May the journey never end for me. Family isn't just about blood relations; true friends who go above and beyond are family too. It's crucial to prioritize family over work, a challenging yet rewarding endeavor. Small steps like disconnecting after work, eating a meal together, and cherishing every moment can make a significant difference. Remember, work won't care for you in old age, but family will always be there. Ask yourself who you want to see when you need the drool wiped from your face, your boss or your child. In the words of Albert Einstein, "Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life." Traveling with a toddler? Me this morning. It's a test of patience, no doubt. And I would be lying if I said I didn’t regret the trip at times, we just boarded!!😏 Sometimes I find myself longing for the days when I could savor a quiet coffee. not have cream cheese smeared on my pants. or have the space to prepare for that presentation I want to finish. But then there are those moments: the ones when I giggle as I watch my little one excitedly point out every new thing, or when he whispers "shhh mamma going potty" in the bathroom, reminding me how small moments can feel so big. We fought a little too – as toddlers do – but in between the chaos, there’s pure joy. It’s a reminder that being a parent, especially a mom, is about showing up with love and patience, even when things aren’t going as planned. We’re constantly being tested, yet we keep going, always with an eye toward what matters most: caring for and supporting the little ones in our lives. And isn’t that what leadership is about? Navigating challenges, staying calm in the storm, and nurturing growth in others, even when it’s tough. The same patience we learn as parents is the patience we bring to work – to teams, to clients, and to every decision we make.
