The European Union aims to have 2% of its shipping run on green hydrogen by 2030, but the production of green hydrogen-based replacements requires significant capital investments. Transport & Environment (T&E), an NGO advocating for clean transport and energy, has mapped energy projects in development across Europe and found that if at least 17 green hydrogen projects become operational, they could meet nearly 4% of EU shipping's total energy demand by 2030. T&E found 44 other hydrogen projects in Europe that could also provide green fuels for ships, but project developers are also considering other hydrogen-hungry industries. The EU should ensure more supply and demand of e-fuels through regulation to provide investment certainty for fuel producers and shipping companies. T&E recommends member states mandate at least 1.2% of shipping fuels to be e-fuels by 2030 to secure all current projects and allow more projects to reach the final investment decision. Germany and Australia's $444 million green hydrogen auction marks a critical step in accelerating the global transition to clean energy. This partnership not only strengthens economic ties but also creates a vital framework for scaling hydrogen production and reducing global emissions. Potentially, the initiative could produce up to 30 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2050, setting the stage for a new era of renewable energy trade! And for Australia, this is more than an export opportunity, it's a chance to position itself as a renewable energy superpower, aligning with global net zero ambitions. #GreenHydrogen #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability #NetZero

Michael and his organization are onto something – the current #solar supply chain is too carbon-intensive. As our recent Boundless Report illustrates, recycled and domestically-produced steel module frames can greatly reduce the solar industry’s carbon footprint. Why does solar manufacturing have such a large carbon footprint in China? This recent report by Global Energy Monitor details the ongoing expansion of coal-fired power in China, where some 2/3 of the world's new carbon intensive generating capacity has been installed in recent years. "However, despite promising momentum, the world’s operating coal power capacity has grown 11% since 2015, and global coal use and coal capacity reached an all time high in 2023. The global coal fleet grew by 48.4 gigawatts (GW), or 2%, in 2023 to a total of 2,130 GW, with China driving two-thirds of additions. " https://lnkd.in/eWmvSqMD

#Supporting the production of #renewable #hydrogen in #EU: Today, the Commission is also launching the second auction under the European Hydrogen Bank, via the Innovation Fund (IF24 Auction). It will allocate €1.2 billion from EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) revenues to support producers of hydrogen categorised as Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) located in the European Economic Area (EEA). With a budget increased by €400 million compared to the first IF23 Auction, the new IF24 Auction will support projects for renewable hydrogen production regardless of the sector in which it will be consumed, with a dedicated budget of €1 billion; as well as hydrogen production in projects with off-takers in the maritime sector, with a dedicated budget of €200 million. The Commission is also offering an ‘Auctions-as-a-service' mechanism, which allows Member States to finance projects that had bid in the auction but were not selected for Innovation Fund support due to budgetary limitations. This enables Member States to use national funds to support projects on their territory without the need to run a separate auction at national level, reducing the administrative burden and cost for all parties. Spain, Lithuania and Austria have recently announced their participation in Auctions-as-a-Service this year, pledging up to €836 million in national funds to support renewable hydrogen production projects located in their countries.
