I'm so happy to see the coverage that this story is finally getting, thanks to the advocacy work of BC Food & Beverage and the leadership of James Donaldson. Watching the story on last nights news, I was dismayed to hear the misinformed comment by BC Ag Minister Pam Alexis that "the industry in BC is thriving". It's not, and the fact that the Minister doesn't know that is shameful. The #foodmanufacturingindustry in BC is blessed to have so many entrepreneurs and founders who want to bring innovative and healthy products to market, but aside from the support provided by #BCFB, the path is full of challenges and pitfalls. Food production is an ecosystem, and if we want to continue to enjoy made in BC products, then we need to ensure all of that ecosystem is healthy and functioning sustainably. Currently the largest customer of BC Farmers is the BC Food Manufacturing Industry. With recent plant closures and moves to more competitive provinces and countries, that relationship is at risk. Thanks for bringing this topic to light BC Food & Beverage. Wake up David Eby. In 2020 we were told that we were an essential service, start demonstrating an awareness and concern for the industry that employs more than 40,000 British Columbians and contributes over $13 Billion annually to our economy! #bcfood #bc #groceries #buylocal #foodandbeverage #foodmanufacturingjobs

Fast food is a big business Between 2022 and 2023, consumers spent an extra £2bn each year on fast food, growing the market by 10%. Earlier this week, I wrote about the 'chicken-ification' of our UK high streets. As a reminder, Fast food sales in the last year: 🍔 Beef: £1.98bn 🍗 Chicken: £4.45bn That's about £70 for every person in the UK. But value increases are not just driven by changes in consumer behaviour but also by increased distribution. McDonald's has announced plans to add 200 new locations, targeting high-street locations. Making it easier than ever to take a trip to the Golden Arches. Availability + affordability = Acceptance Another reminder that food environments shape our diets. To effectively reshape our Food system, we can't just focus on the supply side; we need to stimulate demand for healthier, more sustainable foods, too.

The ACT is the first Australian state or territory to launch a plan to support and grow its local food system, strengthening access to healthy, affordable food. The ACT Government is investing $455,000 as part of the 2024-25 ACT Budget towards the implementation of the Canberra Region Local Food Strategy to grow Canberra’s local food production sector. Funding for the first year of the Strategy’s implementation will deliver a Local Food Chain Infrastructure Study that will explore opportunities to support small-medium sized local food producers in Canberra and the surrounding region who struggle to compete with larger commercial providers. The study will focus on areas of food packaging, distribution, storage and networking. It will also aim to reduce barriers for getting local food produce into local marketplaces and grocery stores. Food supply organisations join forces to highlight essential food policies 🤝 The upcoming General Election is getting closer and leaders of the UK’s food and drink supply chain have been urging party leaders to prioritise food security policies, support domestic food sectors, and ensure resilient supply chains. Key organisations like the NFU (National Farmers' Union), The Food and Drink Federation, British Retail Consortium, and UKHospitality have expressed frustration over the lack of focus on food security in political campaigns. They argue that food security is as crucial as national security and call for immediate attention to the issue. In a letter to party leaders, they emphasise the ongoing importance of a resilient food system and outlines six urgent priorities, including investment in infrastructure, climate goals, and policies to support the food industry. Cost of living is front and center for most Australians these days. Here is an independent greengrocer weighing in on the debate and actually 'practicing what he preaches'. When it comes to foodservice operators, price inflation remains one of their key challenges since the end of the pandemic. FIF's latest foodservice distribution data clearly shows foodservice operators moving a large part of their procurement to local and independent suppliers; like their local greengrocer, butcher, baker and independent foodservice distributor. Here is a link to further information about these just released reports: https://lnkd.in/ge6wJJNQ #foodservice #hospitalityindustry #foodserviceindustry #foodservicedistribution
