**Reducing Truck Traffic in Hunts Point: A Greener Solution** As our cities grow, it's crucial to tackle problems like the heavy truck traffic in Hunts Point, a critical area of the South Bronx. Home to families, small businesses, and major concrete plants, this area witnesses up to 20,000 truck trips each year, significantly impacting local air quality and congestion. Yet, there's a brighter path forward with innovative logistics—utilizing waterways. Imagine this: one barge can replace around 50 trucks, dramatically reducing road wear, emissions, and improving air quality. This method not only supports our sustainability goals but transforms our approach to urban logistics. We're also thrilled to announce our partnership with the Fulton Fish Market Cooperative, further connecting the Bronx to expansive markets and opportunities. This is more than reducing traffic; it's about enriching our community and respecting our environmental duties. Join us in championing a sustainable future for Hunts Point and cities everywhere. 15-minute city is the latest buzz in urban planning. The idea is to create a city where everything that people need is within a 15-minute reach, whether it's a park, a grocery store, or a hospital. To make this possible, the design and redesign of the city should be guided by four key principles: ecology, proximity, solidarity, and participation. The 15-minute city is a revolutionary concept that has the potential to transform the way we live in cities. By following these four principles, we can create a sustainable, equitable, and livable city that benefits everyone. #15minutecity #urbanplanning #sustainability https://lnkd.in/djwFP5WN

Have you ever passed by the space under a bridge and thought about its potential? These often overlooked areas hold immense promise for creative development that can benefit the environment, communities, and the economy by providing central space for: 🌱Green Spaces and Urban Gardens to enhance urban greenery, reduce heat island effect, and foster community engagement and well being. Example: The Bentway in Toronto, Canada, has transformed under the Gardiner Expressway into a vibrant public park with walking trails, gardens, and performance spaces. https://thebentway.ca/ 🎪 Community Markets and Events to support local businesses, promote cultural exchange, and revitalize underutilized urban areas. Example: The Bridge Market in London, UK, turns the space under the railway arches into a thriving market with shops, restaurants, and cultural events. https://lnkd.in/dgk-xcVj 🎨 Public Art and Murals to beautify cities, support local artists, and create a sense of place and identity. Example: The Underline in Miami, Florida, includes public art installations and mural projects under the Metrorail. https://lnkd.in/d94uu25B 🏀 Recreational Facilities to provide recreational opportunities, encourage physical activity, and enhance urban livability. Example: Underpass Park in Toronto, Canada, has converted the space under the Eastern Avenue and Richmond/Adelaide overpasses into a dynamic community area with basketball courts, playgrounds, and skateparks. https://lnkd.in/dPAaFQKJ Transforming these spaces is not just about creative urban planning; it’s about envisioning a future where every part of our cities contributes to sustainability, inclusivity, and economic vitality. #UrbanPlanning #SustainableCities #CommunityDevelopment #GreenSpaces #PublicArt #Innovation

A bit more sunshine is always welcome in the Netherlands, but can cause also lower air quality. With more ozone more smog is created in the summer and trees emit more volatile hydrocarbons. This also contributes to the formation of particulate matter. Heat waves often coincide with periods of ozone smog. The combination of heat and smog leads to more deaths among the elderly and people with poor health. (Source: Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu). This initiative in the City of Vancouver probably leads to energetic, lively, better livable streets in the summer time and creates more social cohesion. But also for improving air quality this is an excellent idea. For sure interesting to investigate.
Rock on City of Vancouver! This summer, Water Street in the vibrant Gastown district was transformed into a car-free zone, creating a lively, inclusive space for everyone to enjoy. In July and August, this busy street became a location for recreation, small events and community activities — an inspiring example of people-centric urban planning in action. With rerouting traffic and changing curbside functions around the area to support logistics, impact on businesses was minimized. Across the city, more curbside management initiatives are reclaiming vehicle space for the people—a trend I’m happy to see spreading across more cities in North America! 👏👏👏 #curbsidemanagement #urbaninnovation #Vancouver #gastown #publicspace #urbandevelopment #smartcity

🏡🚗 Suburban sprawl or sustainable communities? Historically, towns and cities evolved around market squares and high streets, but widespread car ownership in the 1960s changed everything. Today, many housing developments lack proper transport links, leading to increased car dependency. Promoting walking, cycling, and public transport is crucial, but these are often retrofitted solutions. To truly make a difference, we need to integrate transport planning with land use from the start. Imagine vibrant, mixed-use neighbourhoods where homes, shops, and workplaces are interconnected by efficient transport systems. Let's work towards better urban planning for healthier, more sustainable living spaces! 🌍🏙️ #UrbanDevelopment #PublicTransport #SustainableLiving (Read our blog "Track and Field: Merging Transport and Land Planning" https://buff.ly/3yPKSPH )

In the relentless expansion of our cities, it's easy to lose touch with the natural world. 🌿 But what if we could bring nature back into the heart of urban landscapes? By integrating green spaces into our cities, we're not just combating urban sprawl; we're fostering communities where people love to live. 🏡 Picture this: parks nestled between skyscrapers, rooftop gardens overlooking bustling streets, and tree-lined avenues weaving through the cityscape. 🌳 These green sanctuaries offer more than just aesthetic appeal; they provide a breath of fresh air amidst the concrete jungle. When cities prioritize nature, they become more than just urban spaces; they become vibrant ecosystems where people thrive. 🌟 By creating environments that celebrate nature, we're giving residents a reason to stay and embrace city living. Imagine if every neighborhood had its own green oasis—a place to unwind, connect with nature, and build stronger communities. 🌿 By making cities feel more natural, we're preserving precious land from unnecessary development and safeguarding our planet's future. So let's reimagine our cities as havens of greenery and sustainability. 🌍 Together, we can turn the tide against urban sprawl and create vibrant, livable communities for generations to come. 💚 #niqsfoundation #niqsf #mondaymotivation #sustainablecities #GreenCities #NatureRevival #SustainableLiving 🌱
