In Niger, climate change is forcing communities to make tough choices. As livelihoods dwindle, many, especially women, are migrating to urban areas seeking a better life. Pathfinder is working alongside the government to support these communities. Our innovative program empowered Woodabe women and girls in the Agadez region to become leaders in climate resilience. Here's how it worked: - Combined climate and health: We addressed both the environmental and health challenges facing communities. - Women-led solutions: Woodabe women were key players, leading the way towards a more sustainable future. - Proven results: The Woodabe program yielded excellent outcomes. With women's intention to migrate dropping considerably and harmful traditional beliefs abandoned in favor of voluntary reproductive health and family planning services. While being the less responsible for it, the southern part of the world is still the most affected by climate change and environmental degradation. In the countries where we, at People in Need work, we can see how this affects mostly the most vulnerable groups of the communities raising even more gender inequalities and affecting the livelihoods of people. #naturebasedsolutions can greatly contribute to improve #climateresilience and #environmentalprotection. Improving ecosystem services, promote restoration through a participatory approach where the communities are actually drivers of a positive change is what we want to do. At People in Need , we understand Climate resilience as the “capacity of social-ecological system and its human components (individuals, households, communities) to anticipate and absorb external shocks and stresses while also maintaining the capacity for adaptation, and transformation toward low carbon societies”. In that sense, Nature-based Solution is a key approach to improve climate resilience and environmental protection. Read all about our efforts by tapping on the linked article below👇🏾

The ocean is critical for biodiversity and livelihoods. But it is facing threats from ocean heating, acidification and overexploitation, driven by climate change, pollution and human-induced pressures. Getting funding to local organisations who can design and deliver local solutions to local problems is key. Ilona Drewry from the International Biodiversity and Climate team at Defra introduces some of the 20 projects that have been successful in the first round of funding from OCEAN. These wide-ranging projects cover 5 continents and 13 countries and have all been designed to bolster marine protection and fight poverty. https://loom.ly/HB0lNsU Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs #BluePlanetFund Photo credit: Yolanda Sanchez, OCEAN

Today’s World Environment Day marks a significant stride in addressing climate change by having children lead in voicing their concerns and offering solutions to the climate crisis. I am pleased to have been joined by our development partners, Dow; implementing partners, Emali Dedicated Children's Agency (EDCA); and collaborative partners, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance (KEPSA) and Kenya Forestry Research Institute. Together, we are working to regreen Africa through initiatives that promote reforestation, sustainable land management practices, and community engagement, which will restore biodiversity and revitalize soils, mitigating the impact of climate change. Our commitment to creating a better world for our children should extend beyond this day. We must remain accountable to future generations by implementing sustainable, long-term practices that protect them. The climate crisis is a child rights crisis that demands urgent and immediate action. Let us remember, it's together, that we can create a greener, safer, and healthier environment focused on uplifting the lives of our children. LCOY Kenya 2024 is set to ignite discussions and initiatives around four key themes, aiming to inspire and empower youth to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond. The Just Transition: This theme is on the importance of addressing social justice alongside climate action. Achieving a just transition requires prioritizing sectors like energy, transportation, industry, agriculture, labor, infrastructure, and finance. Nature-Based Solutions: LCOY 2024 will explore NbS in adaptation and mitigation. Nature-based solutions (NbS) are key to complementing traditional mitigation and adaptation strategies. Discussions will focus on biodiversity conservation, and the role of natural ecosystems in enhancing resilience. Climate Resilience and Adaptation: Building resilience against climate impacts is crucial for communities and ecosystems. This theme will cover Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies, grassroots engagement, and climate-smart agriculture to ensure food security. Climate Finance: Effective climate action requires robust climate finance mechanisms. This theme will address finance gaps, Loss and Damage Fund initiatives, and the equitable distribution of financial support to vulnerable communities. LCOY 2024 aims to help youth tap into existing climate finance opportunities, fostering resilience and adaptation at local and global levels. Join us at LCOY Kenya 2024 as we explore these themes and work together to drive youth-led climate action. #LCOYKenya2024 #YouthForClimate #ClimateAction #JustTransition #ClimateJustice #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateResilience

Celebrating International Youth Day - A Call to Action for Climate Change Advocacy in Liberia On this Day of International Youth Day, we gather to not only celebrate the vibrant energy and creativity of our youth but also to acknowledge their crucial role in addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time: climate change. In Liberia, where the impacts of climate change are becoming increasingly evident, young people are positioned as vital catalysts for climate justice and sustainable development in their communities. Climate change poses significant threats to Liberia, as evidenced by rising sea levels, increasing rainfall, and erratic weather patterns. According to the World Bank, Liberia is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate-related risks, which directly affects agriculture, infrastructure, and public health. Our nation has witnessed devastating flooding in recent years, with the 2020 flood impacting over 40,000 people, according to the Liberia National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA). Furthermore, food security remains a critical challenge, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reporting that approximately 1.5 million Liberians faced food insecurity in 2021, largely influenced by climate variability. The impacts of climate change extend beyond just flooding and food insecurity; air pollution has emerged as another serious concern. According to the WHO, air pollution contributes to over 7 million premature deaths worldwide each year, affecting the most vulnerable populations, including the youth. With youth representing over 60% of Liberia's population, their involvement in climate change advocacy is not just beneficial; it is essential. Young Liberians possess the innovative spirit and energy required to lead community-driven climate initiatives. They can harness social media and grassroots outreach to raise awareness about climate issues and mobilize support for sustainable practices. Initiatives led by youth can include tree planting campaigns, clean-up drives, and educational workshops focusing on environmental conservation. By engaging their peers and community members, young people can advocate for policies that promote climate resilience, thus ensuring a sustainable and healthy environment for future generations. We recognize the pivotal role of key stakeholders like the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Liberia, which sets the framework for environmental policy and climate action. Collaboration between the EPA and youth-led organizations, such as Youth Action Lead Liberia, creates a powerful alliance that enables effective grassroots mobilization and advocacy. By providing young leaders with the tools, training, and platforms to voice their concerns, these organizations can ignite a movement for climate justice across the nation. How Can Local Communities Take the Lead in Addressing Climate Change? 🌍 Local communities are true #ClimateChange champions. They experience its effects firsthand—unpredictable weather patterns, reduced agricultural yields, and the strain on their livelihoods. This firsthand understanding positions them to design practical solutions grounded in local realities, using an integrated approach that includes conserving natural resources and land-use planning, balancing conservation objectives with the socio-economic needs of their communities. To make these solutions effective, communities need support—access to additional resources, new technologies, and, most importantly, a voice in decision-making processes for climate change solutions. However, these solutions are not sustainable without policy reform. As an umbrella body empowering local communities in Uganda to manage and conserve wildlife, Umoja advocates for #ClimateSmart policies that prioritize local people over corporations. This includes considering the framework of climate justice—recognizing the land rights of indigenous people and rural communities, giving them greater control and ownership over natural resource management. These policies must also address the impacts of climate change on hunger and poverty and enforce regulatory frameworks that commit people and institutions to these new standards. These changes will create an enabling system that drives positive impact for local communities. #UmojaConservancies #ClimateChange #CommunityLedConservation #ClimateChangeChampions #ClimateSmart #WildlifeConservation #Conservancies #ExploreUganda #Biodiversity

Did you know? East Africa is facing critical challenges due to frequent food and water shortages. People don't talk about food and water security. These two phenomenal are highly affected by environmental degradation and climate change. Today, it's estimated 111 million people in the region - over a third of the entire population - are living in poverty, with environmental degradation worsening the situation. The double whammy of poverty and a harsh environment, in turn, creates a feedback loop. Poor farmers have little choice but to wrest a living from marginal lands with poor tools, which often results in further environmental degradation If we are not careful we will have a largest population in Africa that suffer from hunger and lack of safe drinking water. And most of the vulnerable in this crisis will be children and young people. By taking a livelihoods-based approach, we can understand the intricate links between environmental degradation, food security, and poverty, paving the way for sustainable solutions. It's imperative now to foster stronger cross-border collaboration among East African nations to combat transboundary environmental issues, such as water pollution, wildlife conservation, and climate adaptation and mitigation. Let's work together to find sustainable solutions for a more resilient future. #ClimateAction #FoodSecurity #WaterScarcity #EastAfrica #EACYouthParliament #EastAfricanYouth #YouthEmpowerment #YouthVoices #ClimateAction #SDGs
