While CBT better known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is considered one of the most effective evidence-based treatment modalities,, the therapist in this video shares how the widespread use of CBT in therapy has been commodified and co-opted by capitalism due to stigma around mental health. The therapist in this video likens CBT to toxic positivity and/or New Age thinking such as the law of attraction or manifesting. Individuals who suffer from PTSD or C-PTSD may require trauma-informed holistic treatment such as EMDR, DBT or alternative treatment modalities. In addition, individuals who struggle with PTSD or C-PTSD are far more vulnerable and while receiving CBT, these individuals may feel that they and/or their trauma is being minimized, undermined, or invalidated. While CBT emphasizes simply changing one’s mind or thought process in order to change behavior, when discussing how one’s thinking or thought process was shaped by a traumatic event or experience, a therapist incorporating CBT may leave the client or patient feeling worse or that there is something wrong with them. CBT also fails to take into account various systems of oppression such as racism, sexism, ableism, etc. which can exacerbate trauma due to micro-aggressions and institutional betrayal.
