Last week I hired my first engineer after interviewing 100’s of candidates. This was a DRAMATIC change for me. Up until this point, I’d only hired for GTM roles. Here are the 5 surprising differences in hiring engineers vs sales reps: 1. Engineers want the reality of the company whereas sales reps get excited about the vision 2. Engineers get inspired about solving complex problems where sales reps are focused on reality of their OTE 3. Engineers evaluate culture on the level of competence of the team whereas sales reps prioritize personalities and fun 4. Engineers could care less about understanding company politics where sales reps want to get a lay of the land and their promotion paths 5. During the offer stage, engineers want to understand your logic and methodology whereas sales reps just want the numbers My takeaway? Engineers are smarter than us sales people. There’s a lot for we can learn from how they evaluate things.
