In April, I participated in the #AVCAAnnualConference2024 held in Johannesburg, hosted by the African Private Capital Association. The GP/LP Summit was an enlightening session, featuring a distinguished group of professionals who shared insights on topics ranging from fundraising for Emerging Fund managers (Rui Oliveira) to deployment and exits (Nathaniel Nyika). During the sessions, I thought about Private Capital Flow to Central Africa, which stands at approximately 1%. The event also shed light on effective strategies used by other African regions (North, East, Southern, and West Africa) to draw private capital, contributing to their market growth/development. My key takeaways included: 1) There is need for local institutional investors to lead the way for investment; 2) The high regulatory costs in some African countries deter investment; 3) Transparency between Limited Partners (LPs) and General Partners (GPs) is essential for sustaining strong partnerships; and 4) More collaboration between different market players is crucial. Overall, it was encouraging to see local investors in the region embarking on initiatives to start a new Chapter for Central Africa.
