No team, no company, no salary. This was my status for most of 2021. Early in the year I left my role as COO to become a wannabe entrepreneur. Why “wannabe”? Because I had nothing apart from an idea. I was working alone, didn’t have any funding yet, and I set out to build something. I wasn’t building a product, not yet - I was building an understanding. I interviewed over 200 GTM leaders: CROs, VPs of Sales, Customer Success, and Revenue Operations. And I followed 3 simple rules: Never start the conversation with your own idea - That limits honest feedback and creates bias. Be real, ask the dumb questions - This isn’t the time to sound smart. This is the time to validate even your most basic assumptions. You’ll be surprised how many “obvious” things will end up surprising you. Focus on routine - you’re looking for persistent pains and recurring actions. Dig deep into the day-to-day, their habits, their routine. These conversations became the foundation of what I’d eventually build. They taught me not to fall in love with an idea, but to fall in love with the problem. That solving real problems requires empathy and a relentless focus on the people who live those challenges daily. More than anything, many of these conversations ended up becoming great relationships with people I admire, and are a daily inspiration to what we do at WINN. They became our investors, advisors, ambassadors and to me, they became friends.

(1 month after COVID-19 started) → Uncertainty was at its peak → $5,000 in my bank → No idea what my business would be All I knew was: I was good at booking meetings! My initial plan was simple: → Talk to 100 potential customers → I will figure it out along the way I first tried launching a coaching program. But with little experience and no authority. It was a tough sell... Then, I attempted an onboarding program for BDR teams. But my sales skills weren't sharp enough. To persuade larger companies. Eventually, I stopped trying to reinvent the wheel. → Offered my existing skills at a fair price → Focused on outsourced SDR services It wasn't easy. → For the first six months, made less than $3,000 → Moved back in with my parents to save money → Kept pushing forward Why am I sharing this with you today? → Many see me now as a Forbes 30 U 30 → Who built a 7-figure outbound BDR agency → But it wasn't always like this There were many days filled with doubt, frustration, and fear of failure. → Those early days tested my resilience → Entrepreneurship isn't just about a great idea or skill → It's about perseverance, adaptation, and learning I want to encourage others: → Stay the course → Believe in their potential → The path may be difficult, but it's not impossible Let me know how I can help! One of the biggest challenges I faced in the ~6 months before I left my W-2 job was that I felt like I was trying to excel at too many things at once. I did the “nights and weekends” thing for years, holding down a demanding W-2 job while slowly scaling my real estate business. Don’t get me wrong; this is the most sensible way to get a business off the ground. Start it as a side hustle, develop proof of concept, and only go all-in when your level of conviction exceeds the benefits of staying where you are. That said, once my business started to demand more of my time, I felt like I was underperforming in both my day job and the business I was seeking to scale. I realized that if I wanted to be a top-performing employee, it was going to require a level of commitment that would force me to abandon further growth in my business. Likewise, if I wanted to prioritize continued growth for my business, it would come at the cost of excelling in my W-2 role. What I’ve come to realize is that when you are engaged in multiple ventures that require significant time and resources (i.e holding a W-2 job and building a business), it’s nearly impossible to become exceptional in all of them at the same time. While greatness in multiple areas is certainly possible, it typically comes after mastering one thing first before moving on to the next. You see this all the time with successful serial entrepreneurs who build a great business, stick an operator in place to put out 90% of the fires, and then move on to the next venture. I never quite figured out how to stick an operator in my place in my old W-2 job, so it became clear where my focus needed to lie.
