This image captures the legacy of the Tata Group, the group that the late Mr. Ratan Tata led successfully for decades. Does it? Well, not fully I think. I grew up and spent my entire working career in Mumbai and I can think of at least 3 pioneering organisations in Mumbai that the Tatas built and nurtured over the years - Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital. They don't figure in the image because they are not "for-profit" organisations in the strict sense. Many of us who grew up in the eighties will remember the iconic Tata Steel ad on TV, that ends with "We also make steel". That ad beautifully summarises what the Tata Group stands for even today-that striving for the higher good is as important as corporate profits. That ad is as relevant today as it was then. There is a lesson in it for all of us - that it is possible to do good while earning profits. That it is worthwhile doing something extra, something more for the money we earn.
True that under his leadership, the Tata Group achieved unprecedented growth, cementing his legacy as one of India's most iconic business leaders but philanthropy remained a cornerstone, with over 65% of Tata Sons' shares funding charitable causes.
He is the real philanthropist. No amount of praise is enough for him
The epitome of Culture and Ethics
Well said Parasuram
Great perspective Parasuram M R! In that ad of 20 seconds, "Aasha ki jothi jagathe hain" major part of the ad is about other stuff/services they do and just 2 seconds it says"is baat mein Garv paate hein, Ispat bhi hum banate hain" as though making steel is just another activity for them. Working towards the greater good of the society, Truly The TATA way! Thanks for writing about it!
