I could write about how my mentor anointed me and sent me into the world to do good work, and how scary it was. I could tell you about how I lost my first job after only a month, or about my worries that I wasn't doing good enough work. But I won’t dwell on those. Instead, I want to share how great this year has been and how, over the last six months, I've grown both in my career and personal life. It's been a roller coaster with beautiful highs and definite lows. I've grown through all of these experiences, and my major takeaways are: - Always try to be consistent: It may seem cliché, but consistency is key. Keeping up with the latest trends and navigating the tech world can be challenging, but the best thing you can do for your career is to remain consistent. - Post your work: I admit I don't always follow this advice, but you'll never get the visibility your career needs if you don't show the world what you can do. Putting yourself out there is important, and the best way to do this is by sharing your work. - Do not procrastinate: I've struggled with procrastination, which I consider an affliction. No matter how hard I try to work, I often end up postponing tasks until I get tired or lose interest. Break down your tasks into small pieces, and tackle each tiny bit until the whole task is complete. As I come to the end of this post, I must emphasize the importance of creating a routine. My Probation Journey 🌟 As I hit the six-month mark in my new role 💥 , I've reflected on my path since those first days. The feedback I've received echoes what I heard at my three-month review, reminding me of the progress made by my team lead, Frederik Röper. Surprisingly, I learned that I was on probation during this period. This revelation came as a shock 🤯, considering the warm and inclusive environment my team has provided from the start. It only reaffirms that joining this team was the right choice. Unlike traditional probationary experiences characterized by evaluations and worries about whether you would be accepted, my introduction to the team was marked by an immediate and genuine welcome. It was as if they had not just gained a new team member but had found the missing piece in their frontend puzzle, embracing my skills, perspective, and personality fully and without reservation. There are so many things I admire about my team. Firstly, their willingness to offer assistance whenever needed is truly remarkable. Secondly, their collective focus on achieving goals ensures no one is left behind. LIFE UPDATE - I'm happy to announce after just over two years of contract work, I'm putting on the Apron and joining The Home Depot as a full-time UX Designer in the Marketing & Ad Tech space. I'd like to thank my mentors and friends who opened my eyes to the possibility of more - Bart Paden and Keaton Taylor- your encouragement and wisdom made the difference, and specifically this door at THD (I'm looking at you Elaine T.), my leaders, mentors, and team for the last two years of growth and development, and my family for allowing me to pivot to the company with the culture I've been looking for my whole career and the greatest people anywhere. Four years ago, my professional life changed when this thing called COVID caused the world to come to a sudden and complete halt. We were worried about our friends, neighbors, and mostly our kids and what the future might hold. I never thought I might not have a day when I didn't go back to work. Definitely a loop in the road I never saw coming. The beauty of a total and complete pause is it gave me time to evaluate and change. There have been many ups and downs on the journey to where I sit today, but here's what I've learned: ⭐ these bends and twists in life? They're normal, they're necessary, and you're not alone. ⭐ comfort zones are great, but real growth happens when you're uncomfortable (scared even). ⭐ setbacks aren't failures; they can be opportunities. ⭐ and success? It's not a fixed point. The key is to BELIEVE. Believe in your potential, your resilience, and your ability to adapt. It's about being flexible enough to bend but not break. So, to all my friends, designers, and other career changers out there on your own paths - keep pushing forward. Embrace the changes. Learn from the setbacks. Be scared, and do it anyway. Celebrate the victories, both big and small. It's a winding road, but as long as you don't quit, you're on the right track. Hey everyone! 👋 I’ve had the privilege of spending my summer working on some really exciting projects, and I’m incredibly grateful to be part of a company that fosters such a dynamic and supportive environment. The culture here truly encourages innovation and continuous learning, which has been a key factor in my personal and professional growth. This summer has been an exciting chapter of development as I tackled multiple projects during my university break. From facing technical challenges to finding creative solutions, each project has taught me something new and invaluable. 🚀 What I’ve Been Up To: Encountered complex issues and learned how to solve them efficiently. Explored new technologies and pushed myself beyond my comfort zone. Gained a deeper understanding of how to integrate backend with frontend to create seamless user experiences. 🎖️ Proud Moment:  I was honoured to be recognized as the Top Contributor for one of the projects I worked on! This achievement has motivated me even more to continue pushing the boundaries and delivering impactful work. 🎯 The Next Chapter:  I'm currently working on something truly exciting! ☁️We've all been there - spotting incredible talent and immediately thinking, "They're perfect for this challenging role". ➡️ But here's the thing - are we forgetting that even talented people need time to grow and adapt? 🌱 Let me share two examples: 1/ The New team lead 👩💼: Sarah got promoted to team lead because she was an awesome developer. Everyone expected her to immediately rock at managing people, project timelines, and client relationships. But guess what? Even though she had the technical skills, she needed time to develop her leadership style. Her manager recognized this and set up a mentoring program - now, six months later, she's killing it! But that growth took time and support. 2/ The Career switcher 🔄: Think about James, who switched from teaching to UX design. He had amazing transferable skills - creativity, understanding user needs, presentation abilities. But some companies expected him to perform like someone with 5 years of UX experience right off the bat! The company that hired him? — They saw his potential and gave him a 90-day ramp-up period. Now he's bringing a unique perspective to their projects. 🤔Why this matters? Just like a mama bear doesn't expect her cubs to hunt on day one, we shouldn't expect instant perfection from people in new roles or challenges. It's like: - Nature knows growth takes time 🐻 - Skills need nurturing to flourish 🌿 - Confidence builds with experience 📈 ➡️ The Real talk: In business, we often get caught up in: - Pushing limits (good!) - Setting unrealistic timelines (not so good!) - Forgetting everyone grows differently (definitely not good!) ➡️ Instead, let's focus on: — Setting challenging but achievable goals — Celebrating progress, not just end results — Creating supportive environments for growth The Bottom line is: Progress isn't about sprinting to the finish line - it's about enjoying and learning from the journey. When we respect each person's growth pace, we're not lowering our standards. We're being smart about how we reach them. Today, I applied for 10 jobs as usual! {Day 41 of posting daily until I land a job as a Product Manager 🚀} My goal this month is to apply for 10 jobs each day. Honestly, I don’t think I have much of a chance among hundreds of applications. In the coming days, I will change my strategy to sending messages to hiring managers and employees at those companies to get referrals. Have you ever wondered what truly defines a hero? 🤔 "Hard times don’t create heroes. It is during the hard times when the ‘hero’ within us is revealed" - Bob Riley. This quote struck a chord with me as I reflect on my own journey. In school and college, life seemed relatively smooth sailing. But it was when I entered the corporate world that the true test began. I was working as a customer support agent, but I found myself drawn towards UI/UX design, and I made the brave decision to switch careers. Little did I know that this journey wouldn't be easy. Previously, I had never failed any of my interviews for a customer support role, so I was confident that I would easily secure a job in UI/UX design. However, this may have been a bit overconfident. Notably, I am the sole earner in my household. Consequently, I resigned from my job to fully concentrate on my studies without any distractions, relying on some savings for the next six months, with the hope of landing a job soon after. But as life would have it, the hard times arrived... It's been a challenge for me to secure my first job, especially with several commitments to fulfill and my savings depleted. However, the real struggle started there. Fortunately, during my courses, I focused solely on studying and conducting case studies, in addition to undertaking internships, which set me apart from others. It was during this time that I discovered the hero within myself. The struggles, sacrifices, and determination I experienced helped shape me into a stronger and more resilient individual. Today, I am proud to say that I have not only found my calling in UI/UX design but also successfully navigated through the tough times. It's true what they say, hard times don't create heroes, they simply unveil the heroes that were always there within us. If you're currently facing your own hard times, remember that you too have what it takes to overcome, conquer, and thrive.
