"Like Dr. Myles Munroe of blessed memories rightly said “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable.” In a world where knowledge is both power and the new currency, a proper democratization of knowledge not just among a few elites but starting with the informants of the people— media professionals will make for a more informed user-approach to these technological developments." Eden Benibo, Editorial Director at Hello ICON Magazine Global, talks with us about practical use of AI and her experiences at the ACOS Alliance in our new #PANTAExperts interview. Benibo recently received the International News Media Association (INMA) 30 Under 30 award, hosted panels at AFRICANXT and mentors at initiatives like The Diana Award or Africa Matters Initiative , which highlights her exceptional skills as a journalist, making this interview a must-read for valuable perspectives on AI and journalism. https://lnkd.in/eed-iY6E

I had a fantastic conversation with Sara-Jayne Makwala King on CapeTalk's Weekend Breakfast Show this past Sunday, discussing my new book, "African Artificial Intelligence: Discovering Africa's AI Identity." The book delves into the strategic implementation of #AI for Africa's unique context. We explored how AI can revolutionize sectors like education, healthcare, and Agriculture, but with the crucial caveat that successful adoption requires a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face on the continent.. We highlighted the importance of: Strategic AI for #Africa: My book emphasizes strategizing to ensure Africa drives accountability and decision-making across industries. The focus is on identifying and implementing AI solutions within the African context, while addressing the unique ethical considerations we face. AI for Transformative Change: AI has the potential to redefine sectors like education, healthcare, and urban planning. However, simply adopting existing AI solutions won't work. Building for Africa's Needs: The key challenge is building AI specifically designed for Africa's problems and industries. We cannot afford to make mistakes by applying generic AI solutions. Responsible AI Implementation: African governments, with limited resources, must be strategic with AI adoption. Crafting clear plans and minimizing mistakes requires widespread #AI #literacy among citizens. As the saying goes, "For AI to work, people need to understand AI." We also discussed the upcoming SingularityU South Africa Summit, a fantastic opportunity to delve deeper into these critical issues. In essence, achieving successful AI implementation necessitates more than just enthusiasm - it demands a deep understanding, strategic planning, and ethical considerations. We are excited to announce our collaboration with the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan (OʻzA) through the innovative platform HeyGen Together, we have developed a unique digital AI journalist named Sobira Kholdorova. The choice of name is deeply symbolic—Sobira Kholdorova was the first female journalist in Uzbekistan, a figure who became an emblem of the struggle for truth and justice. Now, with the power of modern technology, this AI journalist will deliver fresh and reliable news in nine languages, including Uzbek, Russian, and English. With AI journalist Sobira Kholdorova, the National Information Agency of Uzbekistan (OʻzA) can not only swiftly deliver news to its readers but also tailor it to meet their individual needs and interests. Kudos to the Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication (DJC) for organising the Annual Media Convention (AMC 2024)! This year's theme was ‘Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and Social Networks to Combat Misinformation in Uganda’ and I had the pleasure of participating in a panel titled, "Positioning Uganda’s Journalism, Media and Communication Sector for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Open Source Intelligence." The diverse perspectives shared by the panel reflected how various sectors are tackling the #AI conundrum in Uganda. Panellists included Sarah Kagingo (Chief Executive Officer of Soft Power Communications), Yvonne Mpanga (Business Development and Communication Consultant, Business Trends Galore ), Solomon Serwanjja (Executive Director, African institute for Investigative Journalism (AIIJ)), Alex B. Atuhaire ( journalist, editor and #mediaviability consultant) and Dr. Abudu Sallam Waiswa (Head Legal Affairs & Compliance, Uganda Communications Commission) and moderation by Dr. John-Baptist Imokola (Assistant Lecturer Makerere University and media trainer). My key contributions pertain to data protection and privacy as it applies to agency and consent when using and applying #AI in countries like Uganda. See more about the Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Data Protection and Privacy in Africa here: https://lnkd.in/dkkC2ffV However, I also noted that as the media and #AI landscape evolve, trust will become a much higher value asset for media houses as the capacity of audiences to discern truth from fiction will become increasingly challenged. The ability of media houses to stand out, retain credibility in this era of information overload will become critical in media viability tactics - especially in developing countries with low #digitalletercay levels. Lastly, as much of the continent remains consumers of AI tools, rather than producers of it, we need to create AI policies that protect users and encourage the presence of African voices in shaping the development of AI. #AMC2024 #MakAMC2024 #AfricanDigitalFuture #TrustInMedia #DigitalTransformation #FutureOfJournalism

🌍 როგორ შეუძლია ხელოვნურმა ინტელექტმა სტრატეგიებმა გავლენა მოახდინოს საქართველოსზე: ზრდისა და ტრანსფორმაციის შესაძლებლობები 🤖 AI is transforming industries, and Georgia has a unique opportunity to harness its power for growth and innovation. By adopting AI strategies used in South Africa, Georgia can create new opportunities. In a recent interview by Techcentral.co.za with Jacques Visagie, GM for AI and Services at Pinnacle in South Africa, he identified key strategies that could be mirrored to drive Georgia’s AI adoption forward. 👉 Watch the full interview here: https://lnkd.in/d7wMAkqM Here’s how: 1️⃣ Addressing Skills and Infrastructure Gaps Georgia faces challenges in skilled labor for emerging technologies. Adopting an AI value-added distribution model allows businesses to collaborate with distributors, making AI adoption simpler and helping SMEs scale. 2️⃣ Building AI Readiness Across Sectors Jacques Visagie’s consultative engagement approach is ideal for Georgia’s need to modernize sectors like agriculture, tourism, finance, and logistics. Workshops can develop AI solutions for local challenges: Tourism: Enhance visitor experiences with AI-driven language translation. Agriculture: Leverage AI for predictive farming and resource management. Finance: Improve customer experience and risk analysis with AI-powered tools. 3️⃣ Localized AI Solutions Georgia can adapt Pinnacle’s “AI in the Box” concept, focusing on data management and governance in compliance with local standards, fostering trust and accelerating adoption. 4️⃣ Upskilling the Workforce AI augments rather than replaces workers. Offering training programs will prepare Georgian employees for AI-enhanced roles, reducing unemployment and driving innovation. 5️⃣ Supporting Smart City Projects Georgia’s smart city ambitions, especially in Tbilisi and Batumi, can benefit from AI solutions in urban planning, transportation, and energy management. 6️⃣ Leveraging AI for Competitiveness Georgia’s location between Europe and Asia makes it uniquely positioned to lead in AI adoption. Embracing AI can attract international investment and new partnerships. Next Steps: - Awareness Campaigns: Host workshops on AI’s role for government and businesses. - Government Collaboration: Implement policies to support AI adoption. One of the neat things about Emerging Trajectories is that we can generate daily newsletters and "executive briefings" on whatever topic you want. I've been following African geopolitics daily, and I've made this morning's briefing public: https://lnkd.in/gekUPPad If it's something you're interested in, let me know and we can try and make a daily briefing for you. I personally find this approach to be the most productive way to digest news. #news #africa #geopolitics #intelligence #content #ai
