🌍 Even though some time has passed since the International News Media Association (INMA) Innovation Week in Helsinki, I wanted to share a few insights that still resonate strongly with me. During my keynote, we ran live polls with the 300+ media leaders from 35 countries, revealing some interesting perspectives on AI’s integration in our industry. When asked, “What comes to mind when you think of AI in the media industry?”, top responses included efficiency, personalization, and time-saving—showing the excitement around AI’s potential. But terms like “losing jobs” and “dangerous” also reminded us of the challenges that come with new technology. 🔍 A key theme in my keynote was investing in people. While 87% of publishers plan to invest in AI and data analytics, the industry’s self-assessed readiness score was just 2.9 out of 5. This reinforces the point that true progress relies not only on adopting tech but on upskilling teams and creating spaces for innovation. For me, building a strong foundation of knowledge and a culture of continuous learning has been crucial to my work’s success. AI might be the current “big thing,” but innovation and adaptability are becoming the new standard—even in the media sector. 🎙 New storytelling formats were another focus, with discussions around podcasts, interactive content, and immersive experiences to engage younger audiences. Yet, trust (and with that BRAND) remains paramount. AI-driven personalization must be transparent and uphold editorial integrity. The final takeaway from Helsinki? Each newsroom will have its own path with AI, but with thoughtful, people-focused strategies, we can harness it as a partner to drive impactful, responsible journalism.
