Our Fellows are committed to expanding our algorithmic bias bounty programs and red-teaming efforts. Additionally, each Fellow will complete a capstone project aimed at advancing the field of algorithmic assessment and auditing. 🤖 𝗔𝗜–𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀? Fei-Fei Li, computer scientist and Co-Director of the Stanford Institute for Human Centered Artificial Intelligence, envisions AI transforming our world with increased productivity, longer lives, and cleaner energy: “Civilization is on the cusp of a technology revolution with the power to reshape life as we know it.”   Philosopher John Etchemendy, Co-Director of the institute, proposes that while we should not be afraid of AI, it is important to keep human values at its center. And while AI must be regulated, regulation should be sensible and light. Echoing these sentiments, the CEO of IBM describes AI's role as enhancing rather than replacing human capabilities: “The reality is this technology will enhance us. So instead of Artificial Intelligence I think we will augment our intelligence.” The ethical use of AI presents ongoing challenges, with its profound implications for society, the economy, jobs, healthcare, warfare, and more. Yet, the full extent of its impact remains to be seen. I recently had the privilege of diving deeper into these discussions as a moderator for the panel "Why is Artificial Intelligence a Positive?" during the recent Progress Seminar organized by Chamber San Mateo County, featuring: 🔹 Annie Tsai, COO of Interact and active investor in AI: Provided a clear description of AI and presented real-world examples. 🔹 Vishal Verma, Venture Capitalist with Edgewood Ventures: Discussed the exponential growth of investment in AI, including the failures and successes in AI ventures. 🔹 Ray Mueller, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, attorney, and former tech executive: Addressed AI’s challenges and explored its public policy implications. Addressing over 200 participants, including civic, elected, non-profit, labor, healthcare, and business leaders, the seminar highlighted the importance of an informed approach to AI's integration into our lives. We are super excited to participate in the African Evaluation Association (AfrEA) conference this month. This year, Wilma Wessels-Ziervogel will take to the podium to address the burning question: ''Are we experiencing a revolution in how we evaluate due to the emergence of AI?'' However, caution is necessary: AI cannot replace real-world human insight and ethical discernment. I've been wrestling with an important question, and I thought it might provoke some interesting conversations here: If AI takes on too many tasks- from the tactical to the mundane- are we risking the loss of valuable learning opportunities? There's a mad dash to delegate as many tasks as possible to AI. The goal? To make processes faster, eliminating task after task from our plates. Efficiency is king, and there's no denying the advantages we've gained from these advancements. However, we can't forget the importance of the information we gain through hands-on tasks, and the unexpected insights that can come from mistakes made along the way. Take, for example, the discovery of penicillin. Alexander Fleming stumbled upon one of the largest medical breakthroughs in history - the ability to fight bacteria with antibiotics - by accident. It was a simple mistake during a routine task in the lab that led to a major breakthrough, ushering in a new era of medicine. This isn't to undermine the incredible value AI brings to our lives. We just need to be mindful of what we're giving up and what the impacts could be. Remember, some of history's greatest discoveries were born from simple tasks and unexpected errors. #artificialintelligence #progress #humanity
