Solid advice. I know too many Creative Directors that want to have one foot in the "doing" and one foot in the "directing/leading/mentoring". If you are hungry for the "doing" then consider stepping back. There's no shame in that. It's fun doing the do. When I see Creative Directors on every photo shoot, video shoot, brainstorm session, meeting, inserting themselves everywhere–that's not leading, that's feeding your ego. You might not be ready to lead. Trust your team, give them the guidance they need then get the eff out of the kitchen. A skilled Creative Director will know when to step in. https://lnkd.in/gCTZmA6q

As designers, we often start our careers focused on creating visually stunning designs and bringing ideas to life. The thrill of seeing your work out in the world is unmatched. But as we grow, our roles can evolve in unexpected ways—mine certainly did. Transitioning to a manager has been one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my career. Suddenly, it's not just about the designs on the screen but also about nurturing the creativity and potential in others. As a manager, I’ve learned that: 1. Communication is Key: What works in your head might not always be clear to others. Clear, constructive feedback is essential to guiding your team. 2. Empathy Goes a Long Way: Understanding the unique strengths and challenges of each team member helps in creating an environment where everyone can thrive. 3. Growth is a Collective Journey: When your team grows, you grow with them. But the road isn’t always easy. Balancing deadlines, creative freedom, and team morale is a constant juggle. Yet, every challenge is a learning opportunity, both for myself and my team. For all the designers out there on a similar path, remember this: growth isn’t just about climbing the ladder; it’s about expanding your perspective, embracing new roles, and lifting others as you rise. #GraphicDesign #Leadership #TeamManagement #CareerGrowth #DesignLife

Most companies are dysfunctional and for designers it often leads to this → Designers get left out of the most critical decisions. → Promotions go to the loudest voices, not the most capable. → People feel stuck, and no matter how much they push, change doesn’t happen. Toxic leadership. Blocked promotions. Good people leaving. So I do what I do because this is the reality. I build private, hand-picked groups where designers can talk about what’s really going on behind the scenes without fear of it coming back to bite them. We shouldn’t have to create “safe spaces” to talk about the frustrations and the real struggles. I’d be happy just to bring people together for a beer, but instead, we have to fix broken systems. That’s why people keep asking for this. Does this sound familiar?

In the realm of VFX, it's easy to fall into the trap of trying to showcase every skill and technique at once. However, this approach can often overwhelm and distract rather than impress. Instead, employing subtlety and finesse in how you present your work can be far more effective. Employers and supervisors are primarily looking for someone who can manage projects efficiently and deliver quality results. While it's important to demonstrate your capabilities, it's equally crucial to understand when to show restraint. There is a less traveled path that can lead to success: asking for feedback and clarifying expectations. By engaging in open dialogue, you can align your efforts with what your team truly needs, rather than assuming.

In another installment of Creativepool’s ‘Getting to Know’ series, Bruce Mau Design's CCO Laura Stein shares her dreams for the future of the design industry, how she approaches collaboration with other creatives, what she believes makes for successful partnerships, and her top tips for other creative leaders. “Make time for thinking and making, or even just thinking. It's easy to get into a rut of running from thing to thing, meeting to meeting. And it doesn’t help keep you creative. Nurture culture. That doesn’t necessarily mean having lots of parties and afterwork drinks, but more about shared creative experiences, learning together, relying on each other, and definitely laughing together. Define “good”. It’s not the same for every agency or studio. Ensure people know what it is. Celebrate work that’s good.” Check out the full feature here: https://bit.ly/3SZ5A7g

How Can You Bring Your Vision to Life? When it comes to creating your vision, remember this: it's not about doing it all yourself; it's about having a clear vision and assembling the right team to bring it to life. - **Hire Talent**: Your role is to articulate your vision and then bring on board talented individuals who can execute it. Whether it's costume designers, set builders, or lighting technicians, surround yourself with those who understand and can realize your creative vision. - **Focus on Expression**: You don't need to be an expert in every aspect of your career or any other creative endeavor. Instead, focus on effectively communicating your ideas. Whether it's describing the mood for a costume, the ambiance for a set, or the desired lighting effect, articulate your vision clearly to your team. - **Delegate Tasks**: Trust in your team's expertise. Your job as a director is not to micromanage every detail but to delegate tasks and allow your team members to use their skills and creativity to bring your vision to fruition. - **Stay True to Your Vision**: While you may not need to know every technical detail, it's crucial to remain true to your vision throughout the process. Provide guidance and feedback to ensure that the final product aligns with your original concept. - **Embrace Collaboration**: Collaboration is key in bringing any creative vision to life. Listen to input from your team members, encourage brainstorming sessions, and be open to new ideas that can enhance your project. Remember, as a leader, your primary role is to lead and inspire. Trust in your team, stay focused on your vision, and let the magic happen. 🌟✨ 🤖 If you like this AI hyper realistic generated profile photo don't hesitate to DM (gilingyu) Like and share ➡️ write your comments on how can I improve my posts 👌 For gigs and work-related projects in #design, #branding, #video or #uiux take a look at my portfolio here 👇 gilingyu.site Follow me 👉 on WeChat, LinkedIn, IG, and YouTube @gilingyu for more info and special content about these 👇 #aiart #aigc #tech #personalbranding #CreativeVision #Teamwork #Leadership #Filmmaking #DirectorialArtistry

In our latest post we dive deep into Pixar's use of Belief-Behavior Conversations to solve internal challenges during the production of Toy Story 2. Even the most creative environments, like Pixar’s, can encounter tension and breakdowns. When deadlines loomed and frustrations rose, Pixar didn’t just address surface-level issues—they explored the core beliefs driving those behaviors. Here’s how Pixar redefined team dynamics: 🌱 Uncover Core Beliefs: Frustrations stemmed from employees feeling unheard or overburdened. 🔄 Connect Beliefs to Behaviors: Junior staff disengaged because they felt undervalued; senior members micromanaged to avoid failure. 💡 Shift Limiting Beliefs: Leadership encouraged new mindsets—“Everyone’s input matters” and “Delegation builds trust.” 📈 Establish New Behaviors: With new beliefs, behaviors followed—improved collaboration, clearer communication, and stronger team ownership. The results? A more collaborative and creative work culture, stronger leadership, and reduced turnover—contributing to Pixar’s long-term success. 🔗 Read the full post here: https://lnkd.in/eiAmbtQq #LeadershipDevelopment #TeamCulture #Communication #Feedback #Belief #Behavior #Pixar

🌟 Embracing People Management as a Creative Director 🌟 In the vibrant world of creative direction, the art of people management is as crucial as the art of creation itself. As a Creative Director, my role goes beyond envisioning innovative concepts and stunning visuals. It’s about nurturing a team, fostering a collaborative environment, and guiding diverse talents towards a unified vision. Here are a few insights I’ve gathered on this dynamic journey: 🎨 Cultivate a Culture of Creativity: Encourage an atmosphere where ideas flow freely. Every team member, from the junior designer to the seasoned illustrator, should feel their contributions are valued. Diversity of thought fuels innovation. 🤝 Empower Through Trust: Trust your team’s expertise. Delegate tasks and give them the autonomy to explore their creative instincts. Trust not only enhances productivity but also builds a stronger, more cohesive team. 💬 Communicate Clearly and Consistently: Open and honest communication is the cornerstone of effective leadership. Regular check-ins, constructive feedback, and active listening ensure everyone is aligned and motivated. 📈 Mentor and Inspire Growth: Invest in your team’s professional development. Provide opportunities for learning and growth, whether through workshops, courses, or challenging new projects. A team that’s continuously evolving is a team that’s always ahead. 🌟 Lead by Example: Your passion and dedication set the tone for the team. Demonstrate the commitment and work ethic you wish to see in your team members. Inspire them through your actions as much as your words. Being a CD is about more than overseeing projects; it’s about leading a team to exceed their potential and achieve extraordinary results. Here’s to the power of people management in driving creativity and innovation! 🚀 #CreativeDirector #PeopleManagement #Leadership #Teamwork #Innovation #Creativity #Mentorship #Inspiration

Agree. The tough part is that creatives need to create. Because CDs get mired in timesheet approvals, budgets, staffing, and even ops (none of the stuff they got into the business for!), there can be some (a lot of)soul crushing that comes with the job. I know a CD who is given projects to take on as a creative because his company realizes that creating is his most valuable asset and they want to keep him happy.
