Here's the day-by-day breakdown of how August does strategic planning. We call this three-day process the Strategy Sprint. 🏃🏾🏃🏼♂️🏃🏿♀️ Day 1: Why and What 🕵🏽♀️ We spend this day visualizing and articulating our goals. What do we want to do? What is the purpose of this action? What are we looking to achieve? What does “good” look like? Day 2: Who 🙋🏻 We identify who will be responsible for which components of the What. Who are the stakeholders? Whose perspectives should be included? Who should have decision ownership? Day 3: How and When 👷🏾 We get into the actionable details of our stated goals. What are our key milestones? How do we break the work down? What’s really achievable within our target time frame? How will we know if it’s working or not? For more on why and how we structure strategic planning in this way, download our free Strategy Sprint Playbook! https://lnkd.in/g6eg37-7 #strategicplanning #future #transformation #agile #leadership

"Everything going sideways" is the unspoken reason most products suck. You guys know how I feel about #alignment. I've been waiting excitedly for my copy of Bruce McCarthy and Melissa Appel's new book Aligned: Stakeholder Management for Product Leaders. I got to read it early and it's AWESOME. Go get it! And if you are in the Silicon Valley, attend one of their upcoming events--or sign up to join the July 18 one via zoom like I did. This book fills in a big missing piece of the 'how to actually create and launch great products' puzzle. How? Because it's a detailed guidebook that will help you manage up to make sure things don't go sideways during the design and development process. I'm so glad this book is going to kick start the huge conversation about stakeholder alignment that our field has been needing for so long (and people who know me know that I have some practical tools for alignment too; stay tuned for pre-launch signup for my own upcoming course Align Before Design and more content on alignment personas). Six Key Concepts in Product Organization Today, I watched an insightful video that outlined six main concepts in a new product organization. Here's a brief summary: 1. Product Vision: This is about envisioning the future we aim to create. This vision spans 3 to 5 years for software product companies, while for hardware product companies, it's 5 to 10 years. 2. Product Topology: This concept defines how we structure our team, ensuring everyone knows their role and how they contribute to the bigger picture. 3. Product Strategy: This is our decision-making compass. It helps us identify which problems to solve, ensuring we always add value where it matters most. 4. Team Objectives: These are the goals assigned to product teams. They ensure everyone works towards a common purpose and keep us aligned and focused. 5. Product Discovery: This is our exploration phase. It's where we discover solutions, test hypotheses, and validate ideas before we commit to building. 6. Product Delivery: This is where our solution comes to life. It's the process of building and bringing our product to market. These concepts have given me a deeper understanding of product development. I highly recommend watching the video for anyone interested in product management and leadership. It’s titled "EMPOWERED: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Products" by Marty Cagan at the Lean Product Meetup webinar. Here’s the link to the full session: https://lnkd.in/d4-CNCQU Feel free to follow me for daily insights and learnings in product management and leadership. Something I’ve learned from our CPO Richard Scott-Martin recently. Sometimes, finding the right solution doesn’t require digging deep but simply turning things upside down to see things from a new perspective. In the world of software solutions, this approach can be transformative. A strong product management team can excel at identifying and addressing core issues by flipping the problem on its head, uncovering innovative solutions that drive success. It’s not about complex strategies or lengthy processes; it’s about shifting perspective to bring the right side up and reveal what we’re looking for. When facing challenges, remember, sometimes the answer lies in changing your viewpoint. #Leadership #ProductManagement #Innovation #SoftwareSolutions #ProblemSolving

Navigating Complexity in Business Strategy with the Stacey Matrix 🔍 In today’s fast-paced world, businesses face an ever-increasing level of uncertainty and complexity. The Stacey Matrix provides a powerful visual framework for decision-making, showing us how to adapt strategies based on the level of certainty and agreement within our organizations.
