We caught up with Phil Brickell MP to hear about his lifelong passion for kayaking and how his first-hand experience on our rivers has influenced his work as an MP. In his recent speech in Parliament, Phil emphasised the importance of public access rights to the countryside and waterways. He highlighted the vital role recreational users play as custodians of our waterways, contributing to their upkeep and ensuring responsible access.

Herring fishing, a practice traceable to the medieval period, once formed a sizeable proportion of the local economy. Across the landscape stands remnants of this popular practice; ‘herring hangs’, towers for the smoking of fish, lay unused on the beach of Dungeness today. The practice was significant enough to justify a railway service, direct from the shingle of Dungeness to Billingsgate Fish Market. The forgotten tracks are still visible today. A selection of homes at Dungeness are old railway carriages, repurposed by the community to accommodate the needs of local people during the 20th century. https://buff.ly/4d9LYFY

#Mangroves are vital #ecosystems that thrive at the interface between land and sea. It was my pleasure to #associate with significant #mangrove ecosystems, particularly in states like #WestBengal, and #Odisha in the recent past. Here are their key #contributions and #importance: 1. #Biodiversity: Mangroves provide habitat for a diverse range of species, including fish, crustaceans, birds, and mammals, supporting both terrestrial and marine life. 2. #CoastalProtection: They act as natural barriers against storm surges, coastal erosion, and flooding, helping to protect shorelines and human settlements. 3. #CarbonSequestration: Mangroves are highly effective at capturing and storing carbon dioxide, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change. 4. #WaterQuality: They filter pollutants and improve water quality by trapping sediments and absorbing excess nutrients, which helps maintain healthy marine environments. 5. #NurseryGrounds: Many fish species depend on mangroves as nursery grounds, providing a safe habitat for juvenile fish before they move to open waters. 6. #SustainableResources: Mangroves offer resources such as wood, honey, and traditional medicines, supporting local communities’ livelihoods. 7. #EconomicValue: Healthy mangrove ecosystems can boost tourism and recreational activities, contributing to local and national economies. 8. #CulturalSignificance: For many coastal communities, mangroves hold cultural and spiritual importance, reinforcing their connection to the environment. Here are some key points about the mangroves along the #Indianeastcoast: 1. #BiodiversityHotspots The #Sundarbans in #WestBengal is the largest mangrove forest in the world and a #UNESCO #WorldHeritage Site. It is known for its rich biodiversity, including the #RoyalBengaltiger. 2. #CoastalProtection These mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastal areas from erosion and storm surges, particularly during the monsoon season and cyclones. 3. #Fisheries and #Livelihoods Mangroves provide critical nursery habitats for various fish species, supporting the livelihoods of local fishing communities. They are essential for sustaining the region's fisheries. 4. #ClimateRegulation Indian east coast mangroves contribute to carbon sequestration, helping mitigate climate change impacts and enhance local resilience. 5. #EcologicalServices They filter pollutants, improve water quality, and support a range of flora and fauna, maintaining ecological balance. 6. #Threats The mangroves face threats from urbanization, industrial development, aquaculture, and climate change, leading to habitat loss and degradation. 7. #ConservationEfforts Various initiatives are underway to restore and protect mangrove forests, including community-led conservation programs and #governmentpolicies.
