Why do we continue to talk about technician shortages in class 8 industry when we’ve already determined root cause. We seem to not want to lead the way in real change but continue to complain about it. To truly make a difference we need to look at the industry as a whole and come together to improve pay, training, developmental plans etc.. The industry has so much to offer if structured correctly. Technicians need to be looked at as part of the solution not the problem. Prior to moving into leadership roles I was a technician and never really appreciated, felt more of the clean up crew lol. We Need technicians to support numerous products in our industry. What are your thoughts? Am I the only one feeling this way?

That’s impressive! Replacing a kiln shell supporting block and ensuring meticulous alignment is a critical task that requires expertise. Lockout/tagout procedures:* These procedures ensure that machinery is properly shut down and de-energized before work begins. **Personal protective equipment (PPE):* This may include gloves, safety glasses, respirators, and hard hats. **Working with a qualified technician:* Kiln shell supporting blocks are critical components, and replacing them can be complex. Having a qualified technician on hand ensures the work is done correctly and safely. I have replaced a damaged kiln shell supporting block. and I used air gouging to clean the area around the block before replacing it. meticulously aligned the new block to ensure even weight distribution and prevent stress on the kiln shell and grinding the surrounding area of block replacement and Arc welded on supporting blocks. And I have prioritized safety throughout the process. Safety is especially important when working on industrial machinery like rotary kilns. Here are some general safety measures that are likely followed when replacing kiln shell supporting blocks.

Technician's efficiency. Is the technician’s efficiency his sole responsibility? The technician’s efficiency measures the technician's skill level. Three factors affect the technician’s efficiency: • His training; service manager's responsibility. • Kind of jobs he will perform; service manager's responsibility. • His awareness; technician's responsibility. Therefore, before you ask him about the size of the fish, you must train him how to fish. #KPI

Over the past two weeks I've had the opportunity to work alongside a highly experienced and knowledgeable technician doing preventive maintenance on af90t auto capsulation machines. We also discused the importance of autonomous maintenance and application of KAIZEN principles. The following benefits of AM stood out. 1. Prevents Deterioration: Regular maintenance tasks (cleaning, lubricating, etc.) extend the machine’s lifespan and reduce breakdowns. 2. Ownership and Responsibility: Operators take charge of upkeep, fostering pride and accountability. 3. Quality and Safety: Well-maintained equipment ensures high-quality capsules and reduces safety risks. 📋 Daily Checklist: Cleaning: Remove dust and debris. Lubrication: Apply lubricants. Inspections: Check for wear and tear, loose nuts/bolts and other abnormalities. Documentation: Record completed tasks and ensure proper AM/PM scheduling.

Does this technician look happy? He absolutely dont. The every day stress that a technician has to be addressed. Or you will have a revolving door in your dealership. But, let's take a look at the situation. Time is money. And technicians pay a lot of money for tools which creates more stress. They aren't getting a return on their investment. That combined with the every day stress, and the body aches makes it look like a tough situation for them, and the Service Manager. Here is my tip of the day. It worked great for me. The tech who can perform the repair the quickest needs that job. And every one of those jobs. Too many cars? Rank the technicians on a scale. If the quickest tech isn't available, work the list from the top down. Before you know it, you have a shop full of producing technicians. Then everyone is happy.

In the struggle against the technician shortage, one area of improvement is technician retainment. “The bottom line is, I don’t hate what I do, but there are better ways to make a living,” said Brandon Harmatiuk, sr. master technician at Subaru. “The amount of effort it takes to become an elite technician applied to a different career could probably get you more freedom and better comp." There are several potential reasons for technician disillusionment, including unpopular flat-rate payment structures, work-life balance (or lack thereof), and a lack of mentorship in the industry. Over the next 5 years, the Equipment Industry is projected to require the training and hiring of 73,500 technicians. A high turnover rate for technicians in some companies could pose challenges for future growth. Factors such as lack of training, employee engagement, poor work conditions, technical advancements, and management support can impact the industry. Without adequate support, the quality of equipment, residual value, and bottom line may suffer. Engaging with Service Departments is crucial in addressing these issues. 9moI agree we often identify issues but fail to take action. However feeling appreciated isn't just tied to pay, training and development. I have found its tied to the culture and having a sense of belonging. We all thrive from purpose and responsibility and by leveraging a Intranet Packaged Solution to drive engagements makes a BIG difference in providing visibility on that.
