Today was special. Having worked with the team organising the BPR Summit which included Olly Harrison DL Martin Williams Steve Perez Andrew Ward Clive Bailye and Emily Sheffield Today was the day! What a day! We successfully brought the farming community and the world of family business together to amplify the voice and call upon the Government to consult and review the challenges around inheritance tax, APR, BPR and National Insurance. The voice was heard from influencers, advisers, farmers and family businesses, all of whom want a plan for growth enabling the creation of sustainable businesses that can help meet the needs of the Exchequer whilst putting the great back into Great Britain. Honest, authentic and passionate stories resonated with a large crowd in the London Palladium who are resolute in their aims and continue to build growing businesses with investment and innovation rather than funding IHT liabilities that will ultimately result in a smaller pot to fund services centrally. It was an honour to host the day, bring members of our FBU community to the event and hear Kemi Badenoch announce a commitment to reversing BPR adding to their previous pledge to reverse APR. The campaign continues. More letters will be written. More lobbying done. On a personal note, never in a million years would I have thought that I would be standing on the stage of The London Palladium as part of a national family business event with such fabulous speakers and even get to introduce the Leader of the Opposition to speak! In June 2024 the Message was very , very clear , GROWTH , GROWTH from Kier Starmer we are Not going to Tax you the Up Turn in the Economy will Fund our GROWTH NOW instead the New Government have started to ‘ pick our pockets ‘ . Family Businesses for John O Groats to Lands End now have a lot of Increased Costs which could have a devastating effect for years to come 55% of UK Food only is produced here . Could we produce more ? YES 80 yrs ago ‘ D DAY ‘ We are an island FOOD supplies desparately Short Farmers came to our rescue What will the Government do and Who would they turn to if circumstances present themselves again ? Are they prepared ? Sweden now training all the population in ‘ Warfare Preparation ‘ ! Family Businesses are unique they work to make their Customers ‘ successful ‘ you can define that in any way you like ! Which means working long , long weeks often 7 days They are ‘ passionate , very entrepeneural , totally committed , have proven track record The London Palladium ( kindly opened FREE of CHARGE kindly by Andrew Lloyd Webber ) last Monday Allowed a platform for all kinds of Family Businesses , Farmers led the way as we came to all understand the SPARK for GROWTH has just GONE OUT !
This was a really excellent event. I felt very moved listening to the family business owners and members of the farming community, from all over the country, talk about the impact that the proposed legislation will have on their businesses, their families, local communities and the wider economy. Thanks Paul #FamilyBusinessMatters

1dThis was an excellent event Paul, with a fantastic lineup of speakers. I also had the opportunity to connect with several attendees and the message is clear. The proposed changes are likely to impede growth and investment. This impact won’t just affect family-run businesses but could also have wider implications for the general population, potentially leading to reduced funding for public services.
