By now everyone has heard about the fiasco with Google's Gemini image generation. To me, the scariest thing was not what it did or did not generate. It was that googlers (and say what you will, these are very smart people!) were not able to control the system they built in the manner that they wanted. The only "knobs" they had was a somewhat imprecise rewriting of the prompt and eventually post-hoc removing all generated images that were detected as human-like. This doesn't bode well for building complex systems on top of LLM-like modules, since we probably want to be able to have precise control of the individual components. But if we are doing that, maybe we don't need the full power of the models and building the components should involve stripping the "intelligence" down? As much as I dislike the management systems that do it to humans (and there are many), computers are not human yet.

🔎 Not a good time to have Google as your default search engine. Sometimes we forget how reliant and dependent we are on these services. Today is another stark reminder. ⚠ How many companies have Google going down on the risk register? Yet again, it seems a great innovation is poised to leave carnage in its wake. #Google's new #AI-powered #search is already hurting web #creators and publishers, threatening to gut the vibrant ecosystem of blogs, review sites, and online magazines that depend on search traffic to survive. Sound familiar? Just look at the fallout from the Manhattan Project or the rise of Big Tobacco. Our brightest minds devise something revolutionary, and society pays the price. I get it, progress marches on. But as the article lays out, Google's AI pivot could cut search traffic to websites by 20% or more, translating to billions in losses for creators. All while further concentrating power in the hands of a few tech giants.
