👴 How do we bridge communication and monitor the health condition of the elderly who are living apart from their families? Team Coffee’s wearable device might be the solution 👀 (#DT02 pitch) ☕ Team Coffee (Mika Datyana, P.Mai Trinh, Tai, Sue) developed a wearable device with a built in app, that acts as a bridge of communication between the user (elderly) and other parties - family, doctors, community. The main purposes of the app are to connect with other people, check the health condition of the user (Through health surveys, daily check-ups, etc.), and alert family + community, in case of emergency. Check out their pitch and prototype👇 https://lnkd.in/grmp4Qj3

Post-pandemic, we have seen a shift in attitudes toward health, which has led to an increase in the adoption of wearable devices. We have all heard about Fitbits and Apple Watches that can monitor health metrics for the wearers. These health metrics include steps taken, heart rate, and blood oxygen saturation, just to name a few. Besides general health metrics monitored by fitness wearables, in what ways can wearable health devices target specific health diagnoses? Based on the United States alone, the CDC reports that 6.7% of children and 8.9% of adults are affected by asthma. With this overwhelming population of asthma patients, Health Care Originals has designed a wearable device to help asthmatic patients monitor their symptoms. Worn on the user's upper torso, ADAMM (Automated Device for Asthma Monitoring and Management) tracks health information, including respiration patterns, wheezing, heart rate, activity level, and body temperature. The continual symptom monitoring provided by the wearable device alerts asthmatic patients when their symptoms become irregular. Real-time information on irregularities can help patients avoid severe asthma attacks. Other health devices have surfaced with a surge in the wearable device market. Dexcom G6 aims to help diabetic patients monitor their blood sugar levels, and KadriaMobile serves as an ECG to detect arrhythmias. These wearables have undoubtedly transformed healthcare. Wearables act as proactive health monitoring devices, providing real-time monitoring, early risk detection, and chronic disease management benefits. Real-time monitoring is one of the essential functions of wearables as it provides continuous monitoring of patient symptoms that lead to early detection of health risks. Recognizing risk early on can enable immediate intervention by patients or their providers. Additionally, patients can easily share their health data with their healthcare providers. With this information, healthcare providers can further analyze health conditions based on recorded symptoms and create a personalized plan to manage a patient's chronic disease. Wearable devices encourage users to be proactive in their well-being and gives them peace of mind that their health is always looked after. As we mark September 29th as World Heart Day, we are reminded of the increasing burden of cardiovascular diseases across the globe. Hearing about heart attacks in people in their 30s has sadly become far too common. In India, heart disease now accounts for 25% of all deaths, with the age-standardized death rate being 272 per 100,000 people. About 1,300 to 1,600 people die every day in India from undetected cardiac conditions. Globally, cardiovascular diseases claim 18.6 million lives annually. With these staggering numbers, the importance of early detection and continuous heart health monitoring has never been clearer. Home-based devices are now playing a crucial role in bridging this gap, empowering individuals to monitor their health and potentially saving lives.
