3 dream opportunities in just 24 hours 🤯 And the best thing, they CAME TO HER. My client P was already successful in her wellness business. She just had a very successful membership launch, sold tickets to her retreats, and had a huge, super engaged community. But she was doing most of the outreach and often being approached by unaligned opportunities that she had to question. Debunked BS narratives about working a part-time job on the side of your business and looked at it as an opportunity to gain knowledge from other start-ups. 3. The final one was all on her. She opened her mouth at every opportunity to tell people what she wanted. Anyone who'd listen, she'll tell! The result... She got her seat at the table and collapsed time to get there. One of my first work fails involved... a ventriloquist. Yep, you read that right. I just got an email that brought it all back and made me laugh: 𝘚𝘶𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵: 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘦: 𝘑𝘦𝘧𝘧 𝘋𝘶𝘯𝘩𝘢𝘮 𝘢𝘵 𝘙𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘥𝘢𝘮 𝘈𝘩𝘰𝘺. Back in 2005, I was the junior marketing manager for 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳, a B2B brand focused on delivering media and events for the top homebuilders in the US. Each year, we'd host the "Top 100" builders, along with key sponsors like Pella and Kohler. And part of the event? Evening entertainment. That year, we hired Jeff Dunham. He was known, but not as well-known as today. If you're familiar with his act, you're probably thinking 𝘶𝘩-𝘰𝘩. We’d hosted this event numerous times, knew our audience, and had seen (some) clips of his work. Everything seemed great—until it wasn’t. 𝐇𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐝. Like, 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 bombed. Full cringe. His humor didn’t quite land with our largely male, white, and wealthy audience. Maybe it was the jokes about boondoggles in Pebble Beach, second wives, or his puppet, Achmed. I just remember wanting to turn around and face the wall—it was that uncomfortable. And he knew it, too. Thankfully, my amazing boss managed to make light of it, but it wasn’t our best night. 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝? At every event, something will go wrong. Maybe it’s minor, maybe it’s huge, but it’s inevitable. Learning to laugh it off (and enjoying a strong drink later) definitely helps. Another important lesson? It’s okay to own the failure. Two senior execs stepped up, saying, “Oops, this one’s on us. We’ll do better next year.” And we did. Next year’s guest? I had a great time attending the SocialHRCamp in Toronto on September 18th! A big thank you to Jeff Waldman for organizing such an event. Throughout the evening, several sessions highlighted the importance of AI and how HR professionals are implementing it across various areas: recruitment, selection, development, coaching and beyond.
