🚍 Smooth and Reliable as a Swiss Watch 🕰️ Expecting a public bus service to be punctual is one thing; meeting Swiss passenger demands is quite another. Transport authorities often focus on vehicle types 🚌 🚆 🚋 and moving trains and buses, but the customer just wants to get to their destination easily, consistently, and quickly. While it’s challenging to make public transportation as flexible and easy to use as a private car, public transportation can outperform in reliability, time ⏰, and cost 💰. Cities need to design infrastructure according to customer needs. Direct rides from point A to B on a single vehicle are rare, making fast and simple transfers crucial. For instance, Zurich prioritizes seamless transfers throughout its system using a "hub-pulse" approach 🔄. In Switzerland, buses 🚌, intercity and regional trains 🚆, and trams 🚋 form an integrated transfer system. Buses arrive at railway stations, trains from multiple destinations allow for easy cross-platform transfers, and then both buses and trains depart in a coordinated sequence. “It’s eight minutes between the first train arriving and the first train leaving,” illustrating a complex but well-orchestrated dance. Delays and cancellations can happen, but they are far less frequent than in many other countries. This reliability is due to the efficient management ⚙️ and advanced technology behind Swiss public transport. Transfers between buses and trains must be planned and seamless, as exemplified in Schaffhausen. Swiss transportation is reliable, punctual, and comfortable 😊. I had the pleasure of spending a week at Trapeze Group (a Modaxo Company) Bus Innovation Centre and Test Lab in Switzerland. Trapeze's Bus ITS solutions support excellent operations in various Swiss cities, including Zurich, and globally in cities like Singapore 🌍. Swiss watches, Swiss timing, and Swiss precision have one thing in common: synchronization 🔄. Clocks at all train and bus terminals throughout Switzerland synchronize every minute, ensuring that public transport remains "on time every time" ✔️. #PublicTransport #Innovation 💡 #SwissEfficiency #UrbanMobility #Trapeze #PublicTransportation #TransitSolutions #SwissPrecision #SeamlessTransfers

#CaseAwards2024 🏆 Outstanding New Case Writer 📄 Copenhagen Airports A/S: Innovation in Flight Mode? 🎓 Christoph Grimpe and Nathan Rietzler (An Ivey Publishing case) 🏫 Copenhagen Business School As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, Copenhagen Airport was in crisis. Air traffic was down from the pre-pandemic figures of two million passengers a year to a mere 106,000 passengers in March 2021, the lowest numbers since the 1970s. The non-aeronautical segment (shopping malls, food outlets, parking, hotels and related hotel services) was vital to the functioning of the airport. It accounted for 44% of all revenues and 80% of total earnings, allowing the airport to continue investing in its aeronautical infrastructure. Of this segment, the shopping malls and food outlets accounted for 48% of revenue. These were, however, experiencing a steady decline long before the COVID-19 pandemic. Jacob Stockmal Ditlevsen, Head of Strategy and Transformation at Copenhagen Airports A/S, and his two colleagues, Tove Hejbøl Lindquist and Stine Schlichtkrull Toft, needed to look at innovative ways to attract both new passengers and new shopping mall tenants to the airport as it was vital to its status as a European hub. Thank you to Claire Beswick, Dr Patrick Brownlee, Sanjib Dutta and Vicky Lester for judging the competition. The new bus routes are a necessary start towards integrating Western Sydney Airport into the daily life of Western Sydney. Success for the new airport lies in achieving first-rate connectivity to all key centres across Western Sydney, and particularly South Western Sydney that is poorly connected to its new airport. It's essential that we strive to make this a public transport-centric airport, rather than one dominated by car traffic. The workforce that will be wanting to access the 24/7 airport precinct are going to need public transport options around the clock not just business hours. We need substantial further investments to support new infrastructure capable of accommodating bus rapid transit systems through dedicated T-ways and priority traffic signalling. A critical next step would be extending the Western Sydney Airport Metro to Leppington and Glenfield soon, and planning for a future extension to Macarthur via Oran Park and Narellan. This will ensure that the airport and its surrounding precincts are fully functional and accessible, aligning with our vision for a connected and vibrant Western Sydney. Here’s an example of a progressive and accountable relationship between a municipal government and a downtown city airport. Congratulations to all involved in a productive meeting balancing the goals of economic development, growth, and sustainability. We continue to look to #Toronto to engage with PortsToronto to secure a similar process whereby residents, the community, airport users, and the region can benefit from an airport that is #Clean #Green and #Quiet. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport serves Toronto and Canada. It’s time now to secure the future of this asset and the success of this region by engaging in a process of modernization, sustainability, and community benefit. Good to see Alison FitzGerald at London City Airport today. Alison recently became CEO which makes her the first woman top boss of a UK Airport - with due respect to those who have been MDs before now. London City Airport plays an important role in London’s economy, historically as a business focused airport and now providing capacity which wouldn’t be possible elsewhere. It’s also plays a crucial role supporting the fast growing economy of East London from the Olympic Park to Excel London, Canary Wharf and the Square Mile. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has been clear that we want to see more sustainable aviation. Part of that is more use of sustainable fuel, younger fleets with more efficient engines, eventually electrification. London City is pushing on all these fronts. At the same time London’s International connectivity is vital to our growth and success as a global trading world city, and as one of the UK and the world’s most important tourist destinations. It’s something consistently championed by the business community and by inward investors, so it plays an important role in London’s growth plan. The challenge will be, that as we grow, we want to see a reduction in overall emissions from aviation and this lays down a gauntlet to the whole aviation industry. London & Partners
