Continuing from our key takeaways from Phacilitate Portugal, our cofounder Ajdin Jakupović brings fresh insights from Nordic Life Science Days in Malmö. Here are Ajdin’s top five observations: 1. The Strength of the Nordic Ecosystem Nordic ventures and stakeholders are doing an impressive job of maintaining a vibrant ecosystem. Despite challenges, the collaborative spirit is evident, and the region’s nearly 30 million people form one of the world’s largest economies when combined. This market strength highlights the Nordics' significant potential on the global Life Science stage. 2. Challenges in Nordic Funding Landscape However, this potential is often hampered by funding challenges. The limited influx of ex-Nordic capital and a shortage of standout investment cases emphasize the need for stronger ties with international investors to fully leverage the region’s capabilities. Investors shouldn't be surprised by the common Nordic phenomenon of crowded cap tables, which often include a high number of shareholders from early investment rounds. 3. Venture Creation and Early-Stage VC Involvement One positive trend to address funding gaps is the rise of venture creation models, where VCs play a hands-on role from the start. This approach, while resource-intensive, helps bridge the early-stage funding gap, supporting startups in building robust foundations from day one. S/o to Forbion, Sound Bioventures and others! 4. Early-Stage Partnerships Preferred by Big Pharma Major pharmaceutical companies like Johnson & Johnson, Novo Nordisk and Roche echo this early involvement trend, seeking collaborations at the earliest stages of development. Data presented by Eleanor Malone from Citeline highlighted this as a preferred model, underscoring the value of innovation born from close, early-stage partnerships. 5. Cell and Gene Therapy: Opportunities and Challenges Meanwhile, cell and gene therapy remain at the forefront, with both opportunities and obstacles. Mark Farmery from Anocca led discussions on the potential of these novel therapies but also underscored ongoing challenges in talent acquisition and manufacturing — a reminder of the sector’s complex yet promising future. Tremendous excitement for AI in drug discovery and development, particularly for molecular design and identifying drug targets (e.g., Xaira, which Foresite Labs incubated) Optimism for CGT and advanced diagnostics, especially the use of combo therapies and multi-cancer detection tests increasing predictive value Green shoots and some optimism for venture funding in life science tools and diagnostics (fun fact - overall life science venture capital deployment in 2024 is on track to be one of the top years on record) Its not well known but in addition to our strategy consulting work, we work with Austin Duke at BroadOak Capital on an early-stage venture fund to support tools companies.
