WORKING WITH RENISHAW’S REXM20 ULTRA-HIGH ACCURACY ANGLE ENCODERS Shown below is a Renishaw REX20M 200mm with two Tonic readheads and a DSi (dual head interface) used on a custom calibration machine. The encoder is connected to a Mitsubishi PLC High Speed Counter. WHY TWO READHEADS? Even though the encoder is mounted on a precision Gillman spindle, the measured eccentricity is about 2µm (basically nothing!). The calculated resultant error is 236 arc-sec (err=arctan(eccentricity/radius)), so two readheads were required to compensate for the error. INTEGRATING TO A COUNTER MODULE Selecting and setting up a counter module is critical. With over 6M counts/pulses per revolution some counts are going to be lost because of electrical noise, gearbox’s position accuracy, etc. In this case about 70-100 counts per revolution (≈18 arc-sec) didn’t make it to the PLC module. The reference/index pulse is then needed to set the encoder back to true zero. The index pulse happens once a revolution and it is tiny, and even with the help of the physical mark it is very difficult to find. Using a Logic analyzer helps, as shown in the picture. Good wiring practices, shields and proper grounds are also very important. RESULTS The REXM20 worked as expected. The machine is accurate and reliable. However, integrating high precision devices requires a level of experience. Thanks to George Palmer from Renishaw for providing great technical support.
