Here’s what I really think about the industry right now. Recently, I was asked a few questions about the world of office space. So, I thought I’d share a few of them here… Q: What did the industry look like when you first started? A: I couldn't believe how easy sales people had it. Coming from other past sales roles, I was baffled that in the office space industry people will just call you directly and say, “I need an office”. It’s essentially free dinner 😂. - Q: What has changed since you started? A: There’s now so many great office space providers! It’s become more and more difficult to narrow down for clients the best space for their requirements. - Q: What are your favourite recent developments? Agreed, Jim Damiani. The concept of gathering input from employees about how specific teams have worked, and need to work, is important. Having a consulting team (brokerage, architect and project manager) that have navigated these issues with other clients, is even more helpful. There needs to be a differentiation between the "nice to haves" and "need to haves" when planning any office space and experience from past projects is helpful. And people need to understand that the hoteling / shared desk concept does not mean open / lack of privacy. Spaces can be designed creatively to provide a similar level of comfort and separation as in the past, even if we no longer use 8'x8' workstations. These are interesting conversations to have!
This recent article in the Star Tribune has a lot of interesting ideas on today’s office space. I agree with some and have a different slant on others. As always, I would be happy to buy anyone coffee and discuss all office ideas. We are better together 😀
