As part of our corporate social responsibility efforts, we recently organised a community service day at Gardens by the Bay, focusing on promoting health and well-being among seniors. The event was graced by Ms. Indranee Rajah, Minister, Prime Minister's Office, Second Minister for Finance and Second Minister for National Development, and held in collaboration with the Health Promotion Board. Through guided exercise sessions, we encouraged participants to adopt healthier lifestyles while fostering connections within the community and encouraged everyone to embrace a healthier lifestyle with the Health365 app. We are proud to champion initiatives like H.U.N.C.L.E—Healthy Uncles who Network, drink Coffee, Learn, and Exercise—as we continue to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve. Together, we are building a healthier, more connected future.

I can't believe it's already a month since I started my new role at the Ammerdown Retreat Centre in Somerset! For those of you who don't know, I joined as Director in February and I am LOVING it! Set in the heart of the Somerset countryside, this beautiful sanctuary of peace is just 12 miles south of Bath and 16 miles from Bristol. The website is www.ammerdown.org At its heart, Ammerdown is about Hospitality, Peace and Reconciliation. It believes in a shared world; where diversity and different identities are cherished; where all can live free from the fear of violence and abuse, with dignity and respect; and where differences and conflicts are transformed peacefully. As well as delivering an expanding range of courses, from shorter events and reflection days to longer residential retreats, we generate important income by offering five modern meeting/conference rooms with AV equipment and hearing loops - these can cater for a range of meeting sizes from just a few people in a boardroom style up to 80 people in a conference setting. We also offer private stays on a B&B basis or with extra meals (and you will LOVE the Ammerdown catering!). We even have a large self-catering cottage available for holiday hire for up to 8 people. As we see the news each day, it seems clear that the pathways to peace and reconciliation are long and challenging, but also critically important. Please take a look and see where I'm working, but also whether any of the resources or conference facilities might be of interest to you, or to others you know. And please do share this information far and wide! Do let me know if you have any questions, or if you think there's anything we could be adding to our programme. Hopefully I'll see you soon! #ammerdown #ammerdowncentre #theammerdowncentre #peace #reconciliation #somerset #interfaith #socialjustice #sanctuary #careforcreation #conferencerooms #retreats

Denmark's "Garden City" model, particularly in urban planning and community design, focuses on integrating green spaces and fostering strong community connections. The concept of Community Circles ties into this model by creating spaces that encourage neighborly interaction, sustainability, and collaboration. Here’s an overview of this approach: 1. The Garden City Concept The Garden City movement was founded by Sir Ebenezer Howard in the early 20th century, and it inspired urban planning around the world, including in Denmark. The idea was to design cities with a blend of urban and rural elements, incorporating gardens, green spaces, and communal areas where people could live close to nature. In Denmark, this has been taken a step further with a focus on creating self-sustaining, eco-friendly neighborhoods that emphasize local community interaction, environmental sustainability, and green infrastructure. 2. Community Circles: Building Stronger Neighborhoods Denmark’s "Community Circles" are an extension of this idea, where the physical and social structure of a neighborhood is designed to encourage collaboration, shared resources, and close-knit relationships. These "circles" are not literal but represent interconnectedness in the community, fostering: Social interaction: Designed to create opportunities for neighbors to engage with one another regularly. Shared spaces: Including gardens, parks, and communal areas, where people can gather, share meals, and participate in community activities. Sustainability: Many of these communities have shared gardens or eco-friendly infrastructure such as solar panels, waste recycling programs, and community energy systems. 3. Designing for Sustainability and Connectivity Danish urban planning places a strong emphasis on sustainable design, which is reflected in garden cities and community circles. In such neighborhoods: Eco-friendly buildings: Constructed using sustainable materials, energy-efficient systems, and green roofs. Cycling-friendly design: Denmark is known for its focus on cycling as an eco-friendly form of transportation. Community circles often feature bike paths and car-free areas to prioritize walkability and reduce carbon emissions. Local food production: Community gardens and urban farming initiatives are often a key feature, encouraging residents to grow their own food, share resources, and reduce food waste. 4. Benefits of Community Circles in Garden Cities Increased social capital: Stronger community ties lead to greater social support, trust, and collaboration among residents. Enhanced well-being: Proximity to nature, green spaces, and communal activities improves physical and mental health. Resilience and sustainability: These communities are often better equipped to handle environmental challenges, such as climate change, through shared resources and sustainable practices. I love the simplicity + beauty of this new community weaving framework by Fabian Pfortmüller and some other experts in the space. The framework is applicable to any meaningful community or movement you can imagine. If you get all five elements right, you're well on track. Check it out!
How do we weave healthy communities? This is the question that Erin Dixon, Michel Bachmann, Sita Magnuson and myself have been asking for the past 5 years. And we are sooooo proud to share with you all today some of our reflections in the form of the Community Weaving Framework. We invite you to explore 5 elements to weave healthy communities: the Fire, the Web, the Rhythm, the Circles and the Spiral. www.community-weaving.org This project wouldn’t have been possible without the incredible support from so many of you. A huge thank you to Linh Trinh, Alfredo Carlo and the whole Housatonic team for developing the beautiful design and being the most supportive and patient companions. A thank you to all the people who were part of our project team at different stages, especially Sascha Mombartz and Lana Kristine Jelenjev. And a sincere thank you to all our contributors who guided us with so much patience and care throughout the years. How does it resonate with you?
