The traditional notion of financial management in businesses relies heavily on the permanent, full-time CFO role. But today, I'm going to introduce you to a groundbreaking shift in thinking. Consider hiring a fractional CFO. Why, you ask? 1. Affordability: Small to medium-sized businesses often operate on limited budgets. A full-time CFO with a hefty salary may be out of reach. A fractional CFO provides the same expertise at a fraction of the cost. 2. Flexibility: Fractional CFOs can be hired on an as-needed basis. You get expert financial advice when you need it, without bearing the cost of a full-time executive. 3. Expertise: Fractional CFOs bring a wealth of knowledge from various industries and companies. They can provide valuable insights and fresh perspectives to your business. 4. Growth: Having a financial expert guide you through funding rounds, financial planning, and strategy can significantly impact your company's growth trajectory. 5. Focus: Free up your time to focus on what you do best - running your business. Let the finance expert handle the complex financial matters. So, before you start searching for a full-time CFO, consider the fractional route. It might be the smartest decision you make for your business's financial health. Plan smart, act smart.

🤔 Wondering if you need to hire a full-time CFO or Head of Finance for your business, or a fractional CFO is sufficient to meet your needs? If you have: - Complex Financial Operations: If your business has complex financial operations, such as multiple revenue streams, international operations, or intricate regulatory requirements, a full-time CFO may be necessary to manage these effectively. - Needs of Continuous Strategic Planning: A full-time CFO can dedicate more time to strategic financial planning, including budgeting, forecasting, and risk management, which is crucial for the long-term success of the business. - Large-scale Transactions: If your business frequently engages in mergers, acquisitions, or fundraising activities, having a full-time CFO can ensure these transactions are managed efficiently and strategically. A fractional CFO is - A cost effective solution for smaller business or startups to access to high-level financial expertise without the expense of a full-time executive. - Can fill in the gap of interim needs during transitional periods, such as restructuring. - Can bring in specific expertise for certain projects such as financial modeling or fundraising Are you more clear which choice to make? When hiring a CFO (fractional or full time), here's one key thing to consider... The size and complexity of your business. Smaller businesses with straightforward financial operations might not need a CFO right away. A finance manager or a financial controller could suffice, potentially even on a part-time basis. However, as your business grows in size and complexity, you might find the need for more strategic financial guidance, at which point a step towards the CFO title could be crucial. A good midway point is to hire a fractional CFO to lead on strategy, while holding onto your finance manager or financial controller for lower level, day-to-day finance tasks. Have you been sure to carefully analyse where your business is and what you need?

We see this a lot in the early years of a company, it's common for the CFO to serve as a catch-all role, handling multiple functions that would typically be managed by a comprehensive accounting and finance department. Figuring out what financial roles can be implemented to turn accounting from a cost centre to actionable insights, and timing that correctly is an integral pillar of a scaling business. It also free's up time immensely. Great summary of growth stages and the relevant roles needed to keep the finances in order! It's like adding characters in a video game
“When do I need to hire a CFO?” “I am at $10M ARR, what financial team do I need?” Firstly, you don't need a CFO from the first days. In most cases, founders label all financial tasks as CFO tasks. In reality, it's not so. There are plenty of financial roles. An accountant is not a CFO. CFO ≠ controller. FP&A ≠ CFO. You will be surprised at how late you need to hire a full-time CFO. Even post-Series A, you probably don't need a full-time CFO. If you’re just starting out ($0-1M ARR), you’ll be fine with an outsourced accountant. For complex tasks like financial models, you can have a fractional FP&A (Financial Planning and Analysis) manager. When you reach $5M ARR, your ideal financial department can include an accountant, a fractional CFO, fractional or full-time FP&A, and a controller. Then expand the team as you grow. And ALWAYS start with the key challenges you have, not the name of the role. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of some of the roles in the finance team.
