If you don't know CalTopo you're really missing out. Starting as a side project for a volunteer in the SF Bay Area years and years ago, it was really a fairytale answer to the need for high quality mapping capabilities for backcountry enthusiasts and #searchandrescue folks. Quickly, the mapping added user-requested features like waypoints, grid assignments, operational period segmenting, GPS track I/O, then cloud-based cooperation on mapping for large and #mutualaid incidents. With the addition of many data layers including daily satellite, MODIS/VIIRS fire-detection mapping, historical fire activity and wind prediction data, CalTopo added an entire subset of amazing tools for SAR and branched off "sartopo.com" which is consistently the best, easiest and most widely used platform for SAR incident management, including everything from the maps to team assignments, live-tracking, evidence collection via partnered app, and so much more. We used sartopo extensively in managing the search and recovery efforts in Paradise, Concow, Magalia and Upper Magalia during the #campfire of 2018. Nothing would have worked as well or maintained accountability and awareness over such a vast response effort. With around 4000 participants in the effort, there were no casualties amongst the volunteers, largely thanks to the situational awareness and team efficiency tracking capabilities of this platform. A huge shout-out to Matt Jacobs and Michael St John who have pushed the platform forward. I've been muttering for years about a #tactical version and I'm fairly certain that "tactopo.com" has at least been registered for future needs. Fingers crossed. In the meantime, check out caltopo and sartopo for your needs.
