How familiar are you with the history of #clinicalresearch? Read this article to find out.
Understanding the history of clinical research helps us to learn lessons and ensure we do better in the future. This week, Dr Heidi Green looks back at the history of clinical research. We’ve come a long way from the four bodily humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile) to oranges and lemons, and the first randomised controlled trial. What will we do better in the future? In between the black-box nature of AI-based predictive models and the transparency of first-principle mechanistic models is the emerging domain of Structural Causal Models. Like all models, SCMs need to be benchmarked and validated. With my colleagues Erick R Scott and Eren Ahsen and other collaborators, we are organizing a Data Competition to benchmark and validate SCM for prediction of outcome (28-day survival of COVID-19 patients) under real-world interventions (treatment with glucocorticoids and hydroxychloroquine). This is the first of many to come DREAM Challenges on SCMs. We are inviting participation in this SCM to all people interested in learning or applying causal models to health related problems. Winners will be invited to participate as speakers in the 4th Midwest Healthcare Conference. Registration site: https://lnkd.in/grBJwhax More information about the Challenge: https://lnkd.in/gtFyH9ks
Join us for an exciting data competition launching on July 18! Utilize the cutting-edge causal inference platform, cStructure, to uncover causal relationships and estimate the effects of glucocorticoids and hydroxychloroquine on the 28-day survival rates of COVID-19 patients. In the words of Farideh - 'we've never really studied the female body' Despite advancements in health science, chronic period pain remains largely normalised and under-researched, leaving many women to suffer needlessly. As someone who lived with Primary Dysmenorrhoea for 19 years before being diagnosed with #endometriosis (where it then became Secondary Dysmenorrhoea), I understand how vital and urgent the quest for better treatment outcomes is. This week on Phoenix Sound, we're proud to feature Prof Kylie O'Brien, Chief Scientific Officer at Cannim Group, sponsors of The Lumir Mission Plant-based Medicine for Primary Dysmenorrhoea (Period Pain) Study. Conducted by NICM Health Research Institute’s Associate A/Prof Mike Armour, the study aims to assess the potential effectiveness of plant-based medicine in alleviating period pain over a 6-month duration. Join us on substack as we walk through the science behind this study, including information on how to participate in this groundbreaking research. #phoenixsound #womenshealth #medicinalcannabis #substack
