So I want to get this post out as a bit of a shoehorn between doing annual planning sessions with clients. Typically our annuals are two days and it is a combination of strategic planning and execution reinforcement. It's also about bringing the team together and getting consensus and alignment along with some team/trust building exercises. There might also be a great dinner in between! When we look forward, we look at 4 timeframes. Long term (typically 10 years but often times shorter for tech startups as that can be a lifetime), Medium term (3 years), The next year, and then the next 90 days. If December comes and goes without sitting down and looking at your plan, know January and February are great timeframes as well. Things you may know but also good to re-iterate: Organizations typically over estimate what they can accomplish in 12 months but under estimate what they can accomplish in 3-10 years.
