The Story of the Three Apprentices
In a quiet village, a wise craftsman decided to train three apprentices in the art of building. One day, he called them together and said, “I have received a request to construct a grand structure in a distant city.
The instructions for the project are clear, and I will teach you everything you need to know to succeed. In a month’s time, the clients will evaluate your work, and your future will depend on the quality of your preparation.”
The Craftsman’s Instructions:
✅ He provided detailed blueprints, showing every measurement and design.
✅ He demonstrated the skills needed, from carving stone to assembling frames.
✅ He emphasized, “Follow these plans exactly. If you do, your work will stand firm and earn you great rewards.”
The Apprentices’ Responses:
The Diligent Apprentice
✅ This apprentice listened carefully, practiced daily, and studied the blueprints intently. He worked hard, knowing the importance of following the craftsman’s guidance.
The Overconfident Apprentice
❌ This apprentice skimmed through the blueprints, thinking, “I’ve watched the craftsman long enough—I don’t need to follow every detail.” He spent more time relaxing than practicing.
The Negligent Apprentice
❌ This apprentice paid no attention to the instructions, dismissing them as unnecessary. He didn’t practice or study and instead wasted his days on trivial pursuits.
The Outcome:
The Diligent Apprentice:
✅ When the time came, his structure was solid, beautiful, and perfectly aligned with the blueprints. The clients were impressed and rewarded him generously.
The Overconfident Apprentice:
❌ His structure was incomplete, with crooked walls and weak foundations. The clients rejected his work, leaving him disappointed and regretful.
The Negligent Apprentice:
❌ His worksite was a disaster. Without any preparation, he had nothing to present. The clients dismissed him entirely, and he walked away empty-handed.
A Reflection:
The villagers spoke of the apprentices for many years. They said:
“The wise craftsman gave them everything they needed to succeed, but only one truly valued his guidance.
The others learned too late that preparation and action are the keys to building something that lasts.”
And so, the villagers reminded one another: Blueprints are useless unless followed, and the reward is only for those who prepare.
