John McGrath – Baby Boomers Making Their Move We’ve now got this historically large generation of Baby Boomers reaching their 60s and 70s, and many of them are deciding to downsize or relocate now says John McGrath, Chief Executive Officer of McGrath Estate Agents. This has implications for many seachange and treechange markets, not just because it’s lifting demand generally, but also because many Baby Boomers have generous budgets to buy with. So they can compete at auction more confidently and with fewer limits compared to other buyers. NOT ALL BABY BOOMERS PLAN TO MOVE For starters, plenty of baby boomers don't plan on moving at all. A study from the AARP says more than half of adults aged 65 and older want to stay in their homes and not move as they age. While it's true circumstances may change and some people who don't plan to move (the red in the chart) may realize they need to down the road, the vast majority are counting on aging in place. As for those who stay put, they'll likely modify their homes as their needs change over time. They want to maintain their independence, but also desire a sense of community and connection. The concept of home sharing is becoming increasingly popular among single older women as a way to afford living in their existing home, have greater financial stability, and create lasting friendships if they are lucky!
