🫴 Raising the roof – What is a chock shield and why are they important? 🫴 Also known as a roof support, a chock shield is a type of mining equipment used to support and reinforce the roof during extraction. In underground mining, the potential for collapse as the surrounding rock is subjected to stress and the increasing pressure on overhead rock is a consistent safety concern. Chock shields can help to create stable and safe working conditions. 🫴 Chock shields are usually made of steel and can come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, depending on the needs of the mine. They consist of a roof canopy connected to a base via a shield and lemniscate linkages. Four hydraulic legs press the canopy against the roof, usually inclined or splayed at an angle to better distribute the weight. Side shields prevent debris from falling into the workspace during support advancement. 🫴 “Support advancement” refers to the movement of the chock shields to follow the progression of excavation, being repositioned as needed as new areas are broken into. Chocks are usually set up on conveyors so they can be easily moved forward as cuts are made further in. 🫴 What are some advantages and disadvantages of using a chock shield? A great way to add support to your excavation, though a passive support, once activated, mesh can prove to be very useful in holding key blocks in place. Property damage and head injuries are controlled well here. Big ups, the mesh overlay is also well done, the rock face also looks well scaled down to competency 👏🏾👏🏾

The high risk of ground collapse(FOGs), in underground excavations can lead to various detrimental consequences such as injuries, loss of life, property damage, and missed deadlines. Implementing a double support system with mesh and roof bolts can significantly mitigate these risks.
