#ThrowbackThursday: Today I got taken memory lane of my varsity days 😅 It was during a Psychometrics lecture, where on this one day I thought I had the perfect question for my lecturer and I was positive it would open up a scholastic engagement. After I asked the question, which to date I believe was a good question. He annoyingly answered me in a manner I think he was sending me a message to never ask stupid questions again lol. Maybe you can advise me if my question was deserving of the dismissal it removed, it went something like "why do assessment questionnaires have so many questions, doesnt that create room for getting distorted feedback because the candidate would lose enthusiasm after the first 100 questions? wouldn't we get better data if we shortened the number of questions?" The reason I got reminded of this day and encounter, is because this afternoon as I was enthusiastically apply on one of the company sites for a roles, I got annoyed at the questions asked that were on my resume. I asked myself why are we made to jump such tedious hoops to apply for a job. Why do we still have portals like that. why cant I insert my resume and answer role specific questions and thats it. Even on sites you are a return applicant on, you still need to start over entering information on your resume. I find it disheartening and maybe my lecturer was right, if you really want to be considered for the opportunity, you will remain enthusiastic and answer the 300 assessment question 🤷♀️ Tell me whats your take, #1 was my question silly ? #2 do we need more streamlined application portals that get to the point and we dont spend 30 minutes populating information that is on the resume #wouldlovetohearyourthought

Some of you who know me well might know that in my spare time I enjoy working with teenagers, to help them grow in confidence and develop life skills outside of academia. A couple of weeks ago I was able to combine this with my recruitment knowledge and delivered a workshop at Leeds City College to 100+ year 10 pupils (aged 14). I enjoyed engaging with the college students and getting them to think about the skills they have and the skills they'll need for possible future careers and how to communicate these on their CV. While I had a few glazed-over looks with an undertone of 'I'm 14 why do I need to think about a CV??' I think I got their cogs turning ahead of their work experience week- thinking about the transferable skills they were gaining and how these might be valuable to employers - things AI can't replace such as creativity, proactivity, problem solving etc. I especially enjoyed working with the neuro divergent young people, some of whom had ASD and/or ADHD, looking at how they can take things they enjoy and turn it into a key work skill. We also spoke about hyper focus and how this could be a great advantage to employers and how to present this passion and unwavering focus. It was great to plant and water some seeds into the mind of our future employees, I hope they enjoyed their work experience week and managed to learn some new skills for their new cvs! 😁 #jobskills #youthwork #cvwriting #neurodiversity

It’s amazing how I went from being a shy kid whose speech was given to someone else to read at the school ceremony. Never applied for competitions because of stage fright even though I knew I could do it and always tried to be invisible. To a confident woman who owns the stage, gets invited to speak at career events, and runs 2 career-driven businesses aimed to help others build the careers they want and land their dream jobs. As my high school literature teacher would say, “The moon can never stop a star from shining bright no matter how dark it gets”. We would laugh when she said this but experience has taught me the weight of the meaning behind those words. Remember, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something or that you don’t have what it takes. The life you want is possible. Confidence takes time to build, but you can do it! . . . . #youcandoit #stagefright #adviceoftheday #careerlife #wordsofencouragement #youarethebest #professionaldevelopment #selfesteemboost

It astounds me how often I speak to mid-career professionals who are under the impression that a resume should be one page. Most of them are hanging onto advice given to them by their college career development offices. While one page is the right guidance for entry level, there is no way to capture keywords and accomplishment effectively on a single page for anyone who has actually had a job post college. Two pages is optimal for most people.

Teachers!!! Apply to that job… Just because it says 100 or 200+ applicants, that doesn’t mean all of those candidates applied. Hypothetically, say there are 100 applicants for a role you are REALLY excited about. Out of those: 40 or less wrote a cover letter 25 or less reached out to the hiring manager 10 or less are ACTUALLY qualified 5 or less respond when a hiring manager reaches out to them. You have NOTHING to lose! Apply early and often! Update your resume and apply to those exciting roles- it could be your next big thing! Ok that’s all. Have a great day! ☺️ ______________________________________________ 👋🏾Hi Im Tyrina!
